Soldiers, Toy Soldiers and Nothing But Toy Soldiers!

Its official! No more holiday snaps from the S Island. The weather here has also been rather inclement the last couple of days, so weekend bush walks will be less frequent for the next few months, meaning this blog may be restricted to its original purpose of recording wargames (lets hope!) and the models used to play them!

The first batch of Spanish Nationalist troops are nearing completion, but having restrained myself for a fortnight, tonight I opened the third box (of six) that arrived here on 6 May - the Female Militia (or Milicianas) pack!

To be fair to myself, this was partly due to the fact that the painting guide book Rick leant me the other day only features one 20mm figure, and that is the Milicianas Officer. So, as a bit of an experiment, I have had a try at replicating the work of the very talented artist in the book - how successfully - well you can judge! I am happy with the results but I dont have the eyesight or talent to recreate exactly the example in the book

Front and rear view of the box the figures come in - as Lawrence (I think) remarked on the previous example, the art work is pretty dramatic!

The contents - above front is the officer figure I painted

As with the Nationalist command box, the Militia come complete with three handy dandy standards to choose from!

Relevant pages from the said painting guide

Stage one (after black undercoat) is chocolate brown base coat

English (sic) Uniform jacket and my version of Russian Uniform for breeches and puttees. Beret repainted matt black

Uniform highlighted and leather belt/holster repainted

Black edging added, brown leather highlighted and the flesh painted "tan"

Collar patches added and flesh highlighting done

The finished product from four different angles

Not quite up to the book example but looks ok to me and it will look about 50% better once based

Finally, I popped into a local (to work) hobby store yesterday to pick up some plastic cement (when did it get sooo expensive??!), and got chatting to the proprietor. Its mainly a fantasy/Warhammer/40K type store, but they have paint and basing products any gamer can use. They also have a large area at the rear set out with tables so I asked how that worked and the guy was happy to give me a little tour and explain how they operate. The upshot being, we (my group of gaming buddies) may have found an ideal location for week night games of up to six or even eight participants, all for a very reasonable financial arrangement - each player pays $10 for table hire but this translates into a store credit - so we really only have to buy something to the value of $10 to have access to several tables, neoprane gaming mats and a significant amount of mdf scenery - couple of images below give some idea of the facility

You hire the table "for the day" so in theory on a weekday, you could front up around 10-11am (opening time varies) and paly until 10pm! Weekends they close up at 6pm and they are shut all day Monday - but I dont think I have ever played a game on a Monday anyway!

Note a couple of mid week, mid day gamers in the top right - one appeared to be a middle aged woman although I could not swear to it!

  2. Impressive process for the figure (lots of steps!)--and the results show them: nicely done! That gaming space sounds very promising. Gaming in-house is always fun, but having an outing for games sounds fun, too. And who knows? You could wind up generating interest in historical minis as well from among the Warhammer players.

    1. Thanks Ed. our challenge is that in house gaming space has only ever really been available at a couple of locations...I don't have any room and nor do most of my fellow gamers. For thirty plus years we have had either a huge table at the wargaming business Mark used to run OR at Barry's place, supplemented by a smaller table a Julian's place. The first is gone and age means the second is looking precarious, so we need to find somewhere!

  3. Nice work mate. I have to say you are a braver man than I going into a Games Workshop venue. The GW staff are usually so intense they make me feel really uneasy. Couldn’t have been a middle aged woman in there either, it’s a well known fact that females are unable to enter GW premises due to the very high level of nerd pheremones generated by the staff.

    1. Lol .... Must be different in the Southern Hemisphere JBM...last time I was there, I was served by a female staff member!

  4. Excellent work, my friend! The militia woman looks half-starved. Will we be treated to more games having found a new gaming venue?

  5. That really is top notch work Keith. She has come out beautifully. A friend of mine's son goes to his local gaming shop which looks very similar. It's not actually a full-on GW shop as I don't think GW shops allow any other games apart from GW, and this one had flames of war and some science fiction going on. My friend's son asked us to put on a demo ancients game which we did. All the other guys were very polite and came over for a look, but I could sense there wasn't any real interest other than mild curiosity, which is fair enough.

    1. Thanks Lawrence. Our mate Rick..mid seventies ex lawyer...went around and checked it out, and he is very impressed! The two guys running the place are wargames themselves; when I was there, they did mention there is a lot of Bolt Action played there. They are not a GW shop per se, but it's that kind of gaming they mainly sell...WizzKis, Blood Bowl, 40K etc.

  6. Nice figure! It looks like the picture.
There are no local games stores near me. The nearest is an hour away. More the pity. Gaming at my house is fun but it does put the wife out as she feels she has to take the kids somewhere so they’re not under foot. I started gaming outside but with summer here it’ll be too hot.

    1. Thanks Stew, you are too kind re the figure! As to the shop, it's probably thirty miles from where I live, but it's about one mile from where I work, so post work week night games would be a breeze!

  8. Great work on that figure Keith and well worth the effort IMHO. Fingers crossed for a possible new gaming place for you all to meet up. That's a neat idea for the shop to run a gaming space and to encourage some sales at the same time. Hopefully you might even be able to attract others gamers to historical periods too.

  9. Great brushwork on your militia gal, nice to see some 20mm figures.
The Mini range from Spain is a jewel.

Your gaming is about to take off, the local store has table renting policies similar to what you mentioned. They have gone from zero historical to twelve running feet of five shelves full of WW2, Ancients, Napoleonics, Victrix and Perry kits. Hosted that mammoth Quatre Bras game in December, doing a deep dive in broadside naval games.

    1. Thanks for the comment on the figure Joe, the Minairons range certainly are great little sculpts. Hopefully, our foray into gaming at the local hobby store may turn out to be as successful as your own experiences!

  10. It's great to see progress on this project. I often wish I went for 20mm

  11. Thanks Neil...I only really did 20mm because I found these figures about five years ago, and really liked them. Plus our mate Rick has all the 25mm Empress SCW we could ever really need! One real benefit of the scale though is lots of low cost vehicle options!
