Great Northern War Russian Infantry - First of the Ebor Figures Completed

This is the first of my six Ebor GNW units, and I am pretty pleased with how they have turned out!

The regiment chosen was the Azovski - as shown below:

These are my version (I purchased two units in the distinctive Karpus hats, the other four are in tricorns)

The flag is "speculative" as in - it's a genuine Russian GNW flag but I had no details on what colour flags this regiment carried - so I went with blue, based on the coat colour.

I did no embellishments on the grenadier's caps this time, as many illustrations show them as being of a simple, two colour design as painted here, without any ciphers, badges or other embroidery.

The second, white flag is the generic "Royal" colour, similar to the Kings colour in British regiments - and was of the same design for all Russian infantry, I believe.

That is all for tonight! Work has commenced on the next unit - this time wearing a tricorn hat rather than the Karkus - the uniform/unit chosen is Ingermanlandski, as below.

  3. These look fab, Keith! This period suits your brush and style well. I like your basing too! Looking at some of the figures closely, a few musketeer sculpts look a little thin in 3D space with mold lines bifurcating their faces. The officers look much more robust. It may just be the result of the photos.

    1. Thanks Jon....no, you are correct, some of the firing musketeers ARE not the greatest! The tricorn versions don't seem to have the same issue, thankfully.

  4. Nice work there Kieth on the Russian Infantry- it is good to get into a regular sort of painting spree- I'm doing the same- only it's Tanks and enjoying it greatly. Cheers Mate.

  5. What wonderful miniatures! And a very nice painting! It turned out to be a colorful regiment, Kit ... White banners with a double-headed eagle were in all Russian regiments. The Ingermanlandski Regiment's company colors were green.

  6. A fine-looking unit Keith. Russian flags become much simpler by the time you get to the Napoleonic Wars, so thankfully I have never had to unravel the mysteries of earlier periods.

    1. I am sure the flag problem is mainly a lack of research effort on my part Lawrence! I had the next unit, Ingerlandski, down for yellow colors until Valentine corrected that error!

  8. Nice job, the figures look like they have a kindly amount of raised details to catch the brush.

    1. Hi John....extra homework for you, as you obviously have not been paying attention! The first four battalions were Warlord plastic figures but yes, most of the collection is likely to be Ebor!

  10. Very nicely done. The extra work on the Grenadiers serves well. Your flags are very useful, and look the part. Looking forward to more AAR,.

    1. Thanks Aly, the Russian army of this period certainly has plenty of variety, unlike the Swedes, about eighty per cent of whom wear blue, faced yellow!
