A Game and More Reinforcements

The number of incoming troop and equipment reinforcements that have been arriving here lately, I feel a bit like the QM department of the Ukrainian Army! Fresh off the plane with an impressive delivery time of fifteen days are 6 x 1/72 plastic kits from super, hobby, com in Poland - 4 x PzKfw I and II variants plus 2 x Soviet T26, which both sides used cos those nasty, sneaky Fascists repurposed them!

I also had a Pulp game with Andrew yesterday after work, to try out some simple rules he has been thinking about. Overall, I thought the rules worked well and I will be happy to utilise them with my Pulp figures - they have an elegant simplicity that I really like - I may even try to redo a solo Pulp game I have not blogged yet (mainly because halfway through, I abandoned the rule testing and just pose the figures to tell the story the way I wanted it to go (always a problem with my version of solo gaming!)

Anyways, the new arrivals were awaiting me when I got home about 10pm yesterday, so I will do the AAR pix first and then share the new goodies with the group.....

We had a 20 point force each, based on these criteria:

Cost

Ability Value

Description

4

3

Heroic Leader Character, Heavy Tank, Heavy AT Gun etc

3

2

Senior Character/Specialist/Medium Tank/Medium Gun

2

1

Junior Leader Character/Light Tank/Light Gun

1

0

Trained Team Member/Soft skin vehicle

0

-1

Tribal/Untrained/Militia etc - roll 1 D6 to add for free

Here is my force - The Nazi archeologist is the grade 3 leader, the officer, whip girl and fur coat girl are grade 2, with the pointing NCO and the female DAK NCO as grade 1. The other female Nazis are grade 0 and the four male DAK are the randoms I rolled up on -1 grade!

This is Andrews force - he had Captain Eccles as his heroic leader, with Alrgenon and Doctor Smith as grade 2 I think then a Lewis Gunner and a female as grade 1

There were two of these - whatever they are's! - and I had to go up to them to get clues/information - the second was behind Andrews lines

Doctor Smith, Algernon and The Girl defending Andrew's right flank

A large group of Nazis milling around trying to come up with a plan

Capt Eccles and Bob/stan/whoever the MG gunner!

The DAK advanced

Fraulein Doktor Elsa (or was it Ilsa..??) rolls a 9 and successfully get a clue (and a VP)

Victory Points are assigned as per the scenario – a point for achieving a certain task etc. Additionally, the attacker begins the scenario with 4 VP and the defender with 5 VP. As well as gaining points by achieving tasks, each side gains one VP for each enemy CHARACTER figure knocked out of the game.

VP can also be used to increase the chance of achieving a die roll – the player must nominate BEFORE rolling the dice if he wishes to do this. The maximum number of VP that can be added in one roll is 3.

Andrews guys quickly wiped out the -1 "grunts" leaving the DAK NCO a little bit isolated!

To hit, a figure or vehicle rolls two D6 looking to score a minimum of 9. The firer adds the ability value of the figure firing to the dice roll. If the firer has moved, the firer rolls 3 x D6 and adds the two lower scores together.

(Note, this methodology applies to any action where the figure is at a disadvantage)

If a modified score of 9 or greater is scored, the target has a reaction roll. They need to match or beat (roll higher than) the score of the firer. If the target is in an advantageous position ie in cover, they roll 3 x D6 and add the two higher scores together, then add their ability value.

If the targets total score is higher than the firers total score, the shot has no effect. If the targets score does not equal or beat that of the firer, it kills outright any -1 or 0 ability value figures. For Ability 1-3 character figures, they take a “hit” marker. This does not necessarily represent a wound, it may just mean they were forced to take cover or duck back etc

She did take out one of these three advancing tribesmen though!

Two tribesmen moved forwards to expose the NCO to uncovered fire - she sensibly fell back to cover (thats why she is an NCO and still alive!)

The SS NCO was subject to fire from the tribesmen and suffered a "hit"

This does not necessarily represent a wound, it may just mean they were forced to take cover or duck back etc. As this is the case, a character can roll to remove this marker. To do so, they simply need to roll 9, and they do add their ability value to the roll. Carrying on with a “hit” marker is allowed and there is no negative effect on movement or firing BUT any character figure ort vehicle is removed from play if they accumulate 2 “hit” markers.

Grade 2 Whip Girl and Pelzmantel Girl taking cover as Andrew advances

My casualties at the halfway point - four DAK -1 figures and 2 SS 0 figures

The Nazis consolidate - well, Plan A was a bit of a cluster - who has a Plan B??

Andrews lone female takes a pot shot

Andrew's casualties - one each of grade -1 and 0

The table from Andrews centre...

...and from behind Dr Smith and Algernon

The SS Senior Management Team take a grip on the battle

As the DAK NCO and two SS grunts advance on Andrew's right flank

An aerial view of half the table

Doktor Elsa and Pelzmantel Fraulein consult (I must come up with a better name!)

Algernon has joined The Girl in the centre of Andrew's defensive position

The SS relocate - we had a sustained gun battle for about fifteen minutes whereby I would roll for Whip Girl, the SS NCO, the SS Officer and Doktor Elsa, get an occasional hit...and then Andrew would roll to remove it - he was doing the same back to me.

Gratuitous close up of the Pelzmantel character

Suddenly, Andrew rolled three crap dice when the Whip Girl hit Dr Smith....then, the Officer hit him too...and Andrew rolled crap again - one character dead and an extra VP to the Nazis ... hurrah!

An activation later, we did a repeat performance on Captain Eccles - the opposition were now leaderless - and not satisfied with this, having finally got their collective eye in, my girls killed Algernon too, just for good measure!

The final toll on Andrew's force, and a stunning victory to the Nasty Nazis, 9 VP - 7 VP!

Now, on arriving home, this lovely object was awaiting me

Upon opening it up, the assorted kits from Poland were revealed - apologies for the glare etc - I could not be bothered trying to get better images - it was late, and you get the idea!

Great additions and if I am honest, probably all I need by way of 1930's armour for the SCW - although I really want to add some of the weird armoured cars they came up with!
As Monday is our Queens Birthday Public Holiday here and it looks like the weather will be crap, I hope to get a good bit of work done on painting/assembling over the next three days - so another post won't be far away!

Until then, stay well, take care and leave a comment!

  1. Great looking pulp game. Those kits will be great additions for the SCW, but you will have to pick up a few armoured cars

    1. Thanks Scotty - yes - I am just trying to decide between a 3D company I came across on Wargaming for Grown Ups blog - cheap at £6 each but £25 postage to NZ....or just getting a couple from Minairons,,,,

    1. Cheers JBM - glad you liked it! Yes, Andrew has in the past been a professional (as in paid to do it!) architectural model maker, so his scenery is first class!

    1. Thanks Jon, yes on both counts...next time, I plan to use a different faction, maybe the Japanese. The Polish "First to Fight" kits are great, about eight or ten parts each. I assembled the PzKfw II in about fifteen minutes last night!

  4. Done right, pulp gaming is wonderfully cinematic (both for eye candy and storyline)--and you gents do it right. Very entertaining: thanks for posting!

    1. Thanks Ed, praise indeed! Having a cinematic feel was exactly what Andrew was going for in his simple rule concepts, and I think he has got the balance just right!

  6. So good to see you getting in a game with your Pulp figures Keith:). The game certainly looked fun. Some nice AFV's there and look forward to seeing them finished. Certainly you can use some of the inter-war camo schemes that are more interesting than the panzer grey and brown of the Polish campaign.

    1. Thanks Steve....yes, it was good to have a few of the Pulp figures on the table against a real, live opponent! Funny you saying that about the tanks paint scheme, I just did the first one today....in boring old panzer grey! Oh, and after some reading today, I suspect I should not have bought PzKfw II's for Espagna....apparently, Franco kept asking for them, but Hitler didn't send any...but I shall just pretend he relented and let his Dodgy Latin mate have a couple!

    2. 'Why let the truth get in the way of a good game', to paraphrase the famous saying;). Of course a few L3/35 tankettes wouldn't go amiss either, but then I am biased as I love these 'alleged' AFV's!

    3. I have certainly considered some Italian vehicles Steve, but then, I might have to expand and get some Italian troops too.....

    1. Thanks Aly. The Polish kits (the Panzers) are great...I could have put it together in five minutes if I wasn't so ham fisted...five minutes were spent on my hands and knees looking for a couple of small parts I dropped! The two Ukrainian kits ( the T26's) are going to be awful, they have about two hundred parts....aarghhh !!

    1. Thanks Jason. I had never been a fan of skirmish or fantasy type games, but I had always liked the look of the figures...so I conceived the idea of a Pulp project and eighteen months later, here we are! My mate Andrew has always had a good collection of individually based fantasy type figures, plus he has HEAPS of beautifully created scenery!
