Thanks to long delayed, major renovation works in our head office, I have been working from home for the last couple of weeks (much to my wife's distress...goodness knows how she is going to stand me being around all the time when I retire in a few years!). Anyway, around 4pm on Weds, one of my colleagues called and asked "Is Ruth still keen to get you out of the house" - when I answered in the affirmative, he then asked if I wanted to go on a work fishing trip the following day, which he had arranged but from which a couple of invitees had dropped out - well. what could I say - except yes!
The charter boat "Seasprite" (I think) which took us out for the day - around 16 fishers plus a crew of two
Exiting Westhaven marina in the CBD - if you look by the blue crane, or whatever it is, you can see what appears to be a WWII vintage landing craft
Devonport Naval Base on the Northshore of Auckland, home to the Royal New Zealand Navy
Not the traditional sunny days fishing in the Hauraki Gulf, in fact there was a reasonable swell and one of our customers got very seasick and spent the whole trip asleep in the inside cabin!
View into Auckland CBD on the way back in. Not shown in my images are the large number of container ships "parked" on our route to the fishing ground - we must have seen at least ten, waiting their tujrn to dock and be unloaded - I have never seen them stacked up like this before and was a very obvious sign of the continuing issues with worldwide supply chains!
Red snapper - the fish we were catching. Each person is allowed 7 per day, and its ok to combine, so if you have 15 people on a boat, you can bring back 105 snapper - it doesn't matter if one person catches 30 of them! In the end, we had enough for five fish each - even though I only actually caught two, and I am pretty sure a couple of the guys got none. my female boss Jo put us all to shame, catching 4 of the first 5 fish landed! As I remarked to my colleague, this is socialism in action - some caught none, some caught ten - but we ended up with five each (even the guy who was sick in bed all day!
And here are the last of the Perry plastic Sudanese warriors
I did one unit of four bases of Nile Arabs - based purely on the clothing of the base figure (if they had too much, I deemed them Arabs rather than Fuzzies!)
Basically, armed the same as the Dervishes, but with different heads added
And the last few Dervishes have been completed too
Not much to say about these that hasn't been said in the previous posts
Next up will be a return to the Austrian Army parade!
"Work" fishing trip--so much for "a bad day fishing beats a good day at work." The snappers do look appealing, though!
ReplyDeleteLol, that phrase did come up Ed, when, after a couple of hours, we only had about ten fish in the boat...and Jo had caught half of them! Snapper for dinner tonight, I believe 😋
DeleteYum. Snapper…
ReplyDeleteIt certainly is a tasty fish, Jon!
DeleteFishing and completed dervishes. Sounds like a productive week.
ReplyDeleteIndeed, Joe - I even managed to fit in some work on behalf of my employer, too!
DeleteNice work on the dervishes and the two fish Keith. How are you enjoying not having to commute for those few weeks? Has it given you much additional hobby time?
ReplyDeleteHi Lawrence - the removal of around 2 hours per day commute is a real bonus - I get an extra hour at least in bed each morning and when I finish work, I am home ten seconds later! So far, not much of the extra time gained has been spent on painting etc, but it's still welcome, nonetheless!
DeleteA great way to earn your money!
ReplyDeleteSmall landing craft don't seem to have changed much from WW2 so would not be surprised if it was quite new.
Having been the seasick passenger on a "fun day out" they deserve their fish. 😁
Thanks Ben - I agree about the landing craft - it may well be of more recent vintage - and also agree that our sick guest deserved to take home some fish. Going for the trifecta, I also agree spending a day fishing and being paid for doing so isnt the worst workday I have ever had!
DeleteGlad you enjoyed the day out fishing Kieth- those Red Snapper look really good- bet they taste great fried. Nice work on the Perry Figures - really great painting there. Cheers. KEV.
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot Kev, the snapper were indeed very nice, fried in batter with some chips and a salad!
DeleteWell done on your haul Keith - fish and figures... you lucky man.
ReplyDeleteThanks Richard
DeleteBeautiful Perry's minis sir!
ReplyDeleteThank you Michal
DeleteNot a fisherman at all, but a day out on the water is a good thing! The Sudanese are looking nice!
ReplyDeleteNeither am I really Peter, but as you say, if I get the offer of a day on the water, I wouldn't turn it down, and some fresh fish in the diet is always welcome!
DeleteAn excellent days work Keith…
ReplyDeleteI do like Red Snapper 😋.
Nice job on the Sudanese.
All the best. Aly
Thanks Aly, one more meal of snapper remains to be eaten!
DeleteLike others I like the idea of work fishing trip……that was never part of my job. Sudanese look good too 👍
ReplyDeleteLol....it's only been something that happens in my work life occasionally for the last few years Matt, but I do appreciate I am lucky when it happens!
DeleteFirst off Keith, my wife LOVES Red Snapper and so is completely and utterly jealous of your haul! I think she would be out on the boat EVERY day;).
ReplyDeleteAnyway, back to the serious stuff, more lovely units once again.
Haha...it is simply the most common fish around Auckland, Steve. Farther south, they don't get many snapper but have blue cod instead...also nice eating. Very little skill involved...I have been our maybe ten or twelve times in thirty years and always caught a few...even got the biggest on the boat one time....it's not like angling for trout etc...much easier for a beginner to catch something!
DeleteSnapper tastes pretty good too! Wish my workplace offered trips like this.
ReplyDeleteNice new minis too! That leader next to the banner bearer looks like a large lad....
Thanks Dai...many people think it's the premium eating fish...last of it gets cooked up tonight! I think the Nile Arab leader just looks bigger because he is standing upright and the rest are leaning forward, running....particularly the adjacent standard bearer
