On Monday evening I finally got myself motivated to try out a small solo game using most of the new "ruins". Three squads of Soviets supported by an MMG were assaulting two squads of Germans. The Reds had one sniper available when a red ace came up in the activation pack and the Germans had one reinforcement squad on each of the two black aces. Let's see if I can remember how it went, as I didn't take any notes this time!
The Russian infantry starts their advance through the devastated city scape.
German defenders are occupying a couple of the ruined buildings ahead of them
The leader of the first squad spots some of the enemy in a four-story building.
On the other flank, shots are exchanged between advancing Soviet and defending Nazi troops
The left flank squad moves up under cover as the MMG deploys to support the advance
The central Red Army squad uses pepper pot fire and manoeuvre tactics to move forwards down the main road.
Whilst the right flank unit supports their advance by engaging in an exchange of fire with the German defenders.
Having suffered from the German fire, the left flank Soviet squad takes cover in the same building as the MMG and deploys to engage the enemy
Meanwhile, on the other flank, the Soviet advance continues. The Russian plan is to overwhelm the German squad on the flank with 2:1 forces, then swing left to take out the other German squad.
The Germans pour fire down on their Russian foes but with littke effect
After softening up the defenders with long range small arms fire, a squad including a flame thrower assaults the German held building
A devastating win for the Russians, the German squad reaches 4 hits and is forced to fall back immediately.
The remaining German squad pivots to put some fire on the Russian squad that has just succeeded ion pushing their comrades back
The red ace is turned over and Natasha the sniper arrives on the board
Her aim is off today though, and she fails to hit any of the enemy troops in the building opposite her position. But the defeated German squad on the right flank has failed to rally and has left the board.
Over the next couple of turns, the Soviet right flank forces move towards the remaining German held building on the left
But then a black ace comes up, and a German reinforcement squad arrives
Both Soviet squads continue heading for the original German held building
The flame thrower squad moves in
Meanwhile, the original left flank squad and the MMG have put four hits on the second German squad and forced them to abandon the building they had been occupying
The Soviet squad charges into the shaken Germans - URRAH!
They win the combat, and the second original German squad disperses.
In the centre, two Soviet squads are moving in on the recently arrived German reinforcements.
Then, the second reinforcement squad arrives, and immediately charges the exhausted Russians who so recently won the melee on the left flank.
The Soviets are driven back!
The Germans continue their assault - but are held then repulsed.
They fall back into the ruined building to consolidate.
But the Soviets do not give them time to reorganise, and immediately assault, led by the dreaded flame thrower.
In the centre, the Germans also make a heroic charge into the Red masses.
After an inconclusive first round where both sides take a casualty......
...... the Germans suffer another devastating loss and are driven back.
Both German reinforcement squads are now on four hits and right on the table edge - so time to call the game as a total victory for the Red Army.
Well, that worked well - the German dice rolling was particularly poor in this game, I don't think they rallied one hit, whereas the Russians suffered as many hits as the Germans, but seemed to remove most of them a turn or two later. The Russians also had several dice rolls of 11 and 12 when firing or in combat, whereas the Germans seemed to roll 1 short of the target number virtually every time!
With a bit more luck, the original two German squads might have held out long enough to be reinforced up to 4 squads, which would have made the attack pretty hard to the Russians to prosecute successfully - but on this occasion, they did not seem to have much Soldaten Gluck!
As you can probably guess form the number of pictures I took of a relatively small game, I am pretty happy with the buildings, although they are not finished yet and need rubble paper put on all the bases and then some piles of rubble etc added to each base and some or all of the floors to add to the look - WIP still for sure.
Thanks for your visit and I hope you feel able to leave a comment to let me know what you thought of the game and terrain - cheers!
Good to see your new ruined buildings on the table Keith and an enjoyable read. Not a good game for the Germans, no luck for them at all. The game seemed to play out really well and looked good fun.
ReplyDeleteThanks Donnie! As usual, I did enjoy getting a few toys on my solo table
DeleteNew terrain looking really great!
ReplyDeleteA most cinematic story line and depiction--not only the terrain and figures, but my experience is that it is an unusual rules system that can handle the micro-action of urban combat (so well done there, too!).
ReplyDeleteOff the workbench and straight into urban warfare. Perfect!
ReplyDeleteEven though the buildings are not completed yet due to a lack of rubble, they still lokk damned good and the extra effort on the bricks, wallpaper etc was well worth it. The carpet tile roads are a nice addition and good to see this project developing rather nicely:).
