A "Game" and Some More Terrain.....

On Friday evening we had a game of "Green Horde" at Julians place - which is basically Zombicide but with Orcs etc at the Zombies.

The main reason for playing this rather than V&F was the return from England of Julians younger daughter, Charlie (Charlotte) - and she wanted to play a game with the old men but isn't particularly interested in historics - she does play the odd D&D game back home in Oxford, though - so this game seemed a good match up.

Our group of adventurers

The "enemy"

Zombies' sir, fousands of 'em!

Charlie's character confronts an Orc "abomination"

Julian v's 4 "runners"

Julian and John in a bit of a tight spot! In the end, we failed to complete the mission. I reckon we would have got there eventually but it was pretty much 11pm and I think we had all played long enough - to complete the game might have taken another hour or two!

My character - she has pretty good-looking abs, for an elf! - her bio below:

Survivors found an unconscious Seli among corpses, after a fierce battle against a zombie horde. At first, everyone thought the elf warrior had a bad blow land upon her head and lost her memory. It proved to be worse: for some reason, Seli is unable to remember most things past a few days. So far, no one knows if it is a curse, a permanent injury, or otherwise. The elf warrior keeps her outstanding martial abilities, though, and proves to be a breathtaking athlete coupled with a skilled assassin. Her joyful temper and sense of humor can be a sad thing to behold, though: every other day, Seli awakes amidst strangers, without any hint of her past, and in a ravaged world. Who is she?

And because people have been commenting about AI on their blogs recently, here are a couple of images created by a free AI program with the instruction "create an image of Sel, a red-haired elf character in the Green Horde board game"

I then enhanced the instruction to this "create an image of Seli, a red-haired female elf character from Green Horde board game using a Norse sword and shield to fight a green skinned zombie Orc"

Quite impressive really!

On returning home after the game, I found my dear wife had been busy with a productive Friday!

Today (Sunday) found as at the Auckland Rose Gardens in the upmarket suburb of Parnell

A couple of New Zealand magpies - I have never seen them this close up before - they were basically begging for food, like seagulls - obviously they are accustomed to visitors to the rose garden obliging them!

Parnell Basin (I think!)

A view back into the Auckland CBD

Looking across the gulf to Devonport on the North Shore and beyond that, Rangitoto Island, a dormant volcano

Wherever we go, I manage to find something with a military connection - drives Ruth mad, sometimes!

A few hours later, around 430pm, a couple of G&T in the spring sunshine

We were joined by a friend

That's a nice short post today - next up will likely be the completed Temu 3d church and some more pics from our S Island trip.

  1. I have a friend who has several of the Zombicide and associated expansions but we have never played it which is a shame as it seems like a fun game. I was best man at a wedding in the Parnell Rose Garden thirty or so years ago. A lovely spot.

    1. Zombicide is fine as a boardgame Lawrence, but I feel playing a campaign (as its intended) would be a bit "samey" - its ok now and again but it has its limitations - I much prefer V&F!

  3. Lovely figures from the game, never played these types of games but they look good fun. Nice AI graphics, they look really good. Great pics, nice to see sun, not seeing too much of it here in the North of Scotland at the moment!!

  5. I see that you are tackling something different on the gaming table as well! I like your AI image creations.

    1. Cheers Jon....our boardgame took a bit longer than 20 minutes per game, though! I am seriously considering using an AI generated image as the header for all future game reports.....!

    1. Cheers Matt, zombie games are OK now and again. AI is quite interesting...not for work, but for stupid stuff like what I used if for here!

    1. Thanks Scotty, I find Zombicide is designed for the players to win, but this scenario was pretty challenging!

    2. Maybe if we'd had the extra character that we were supposed to have*, we could have done better??
(*don't know if you heard me say later that there's always supposed to be 6 Characters, no matter how many Players)

    3. Which AI program is that one (there are so many now)?

    4. Hi Andrew, yes I head the comment! No sure of the name, I just Googled free AI image generator....the first couple let me do a few images then wanted me to log in via FaceBook or Gmail, which I didn't do. The one I ended up on hasn't asked me to do anything...but it may not be the best available!

  8. Maggies are marvellous birds. So clever and quite cheeky at times. Were they tagged? Generally the really inquisitive/brave ones here have been tagged for monitoring, hence handled a bit and more accustomed to Homo sapiens up close.
    Best wishes, James

    1. Thanks James, I can't say I noticed whether they had been tagged or not! I do know a few years ago there was a reported problem with them dive bombing people in the Auckland Domain!

  9. Fun looking game Keith. I struggle with the economics of AI when the best uses we can find for it are making images for wargames. Not sure that justifies a trillion dollar investment. 😂

Nice looking gardens as well. Magpies are not my favourite bird. I have been whacked on the back of the head by them too many times. Where I go for my daily walk takes me past some magpie nests so for 2-3 months every year I need to wave a stick around to keep them away. At each end of danger zone is a pile of sticks left by the community so you can pick one up at the start and leave it at the other end 🤣

    1. Yes there is a famous talk back radio host here who us becoming a bit of an AI skeptic...he reckons its a bubble and about to pop...but he has been wrong multiple times previously so who knows?
To be honest, James comments re magpies came as a bit of a surprise to me...their reputation is more akin to your experience!

    1. Yes indeed Ray, my wife used to have a rule that it didn't go up until 1 Dec, like everything, standards are slipping!
Zombicide is fine now and again for a change, bit like Wings of Glory or whatever the WWI aerial game is called.

  11. Wife loves zombicide but I’ve come to loath it. It always takes bloody ages to play. Looks like you had the same situation.

    1. One thing I can totally guarantee JBM is that my wife would NOT LIKE Zombicide!!
I don't mind it but would not play except for the fact Julian has multiple iterations of it and is keen to play it now and again

  12. Fun looking game and beautiful scenery as well. I'm on the fence with AI. Some stuff looks pretty near, bur some not so much. I've yet to try it out personally.

    1. Thanks Dean, more S Island scenery coming soon!
The free AI I have been using definitely has its limitations but for a random non specific image like the ones in my post, it's pretty good i think.

  13. You can't fault the sculpting of the figures for these games, but no longer my sort of thing, but perfect for a 'berr and pretzels' type outing. I must say the AI work is very impressive and must be giving graphic designers et al nightmares about their future careers:(! Lovely scenery as always but I'm afraid far too early to put up the Xmas tree!!!

    1. Thanks Steve....yep, the figures in all these various boardgames are top notch and my mate Andrew, who has backed the odd kick starter over the years, states they work out around NZ$2 each...which is a quid at most!
I have been having a bit of fun with the AI image generator!

  14. I wont show my wife the picture of the christmas tree, I have trouble having a tree before Christmas eve, game sounds fun and looks good, the AI image looks a bit like the disney Brave character? It can't do anything original but it can pinch from the best I guess?
    Best Iain
