A Change of Pace on the Painting Desk

A couple of other blogs inspired me to go back to an old project and "finish it off" - well, maybe! Peter at "Blunders on the Danube", JJ of "JJ's Wargames" and also Lawrence of "This Life in Lead" - there were probably others too.

I have had 5 battalions of plastic Perry AWI Americans sitting in a drawer from over 12 months ago and now have the last one under coated - I have painted and based four battalions in about ten days - aided by a recent three-day long weekend of atrocious weather!

Here is the first unit - it's kind of generic, but I am claiming it's the 2nd Maryland Line - and please don't point out why that's wrong, I have already written that on the base, so in my army, that is who they are 😉

So, without further ado, here is the new battalion:

I gave them a generic national flag - I think this is the so-called Betsy Ross (no relation that I know of!) version.

As always with the Perry figures, lots of scope for individualisation

The unit is based as per my friend Marks (1866 and All That) current protocol - 3 x 60mm x 40mm bases.

A rear view

After having these figures languish in a dark drawer for over a year, it was surprising to me how easily I worked my way through them once I got started - basically at least six figures from start to finish in every painting session. I am now toying with the idea of a prohibition on new stuff till I do the same with three or four boxes of plastic Napoleonic cavalry I have stashed under the desk...... we will see how that goes!

Hope you like these - please let me know by leaving a comment - I am off to a "Dungeon Crawl" skirmish game at mate Julians tomorrow after work so an AAR will follow, probably on Saturday.

  2. Very nice Keith I have some more AWI lurking somewhere too. I quite like the six to a base convention and some of my Naps are moving that way ?

    1. Thanks Matt - I like the look too and moving three bases rather than six per unit speeds things up a bit, too!

  3. They look great Keith and I'd forgotten the other periods oyu've been working on with your Soviet surge of late! Just to tempt you, the latest issue of Wargames Illustrated has a free sprue of Soviet WWII infantry, just in case it might be of use to you...

    1. Thanks Steve, and for the tip on WI,although I don't know if any of our group still buy it...i never have and over here, you don't just see it in a newsagents, you have to have a regular order. I guess the sprue is from the new Warlord set?

    2. I think so Keith, but not too clear on the Youtube video I saw. I imagine they will have more info on their website. Finding the magazines in the shops can be tricky, given how WH Smith's are closing many of their stores now:(.

    3. We have an equivalent to WH Smiths (or John Menzies!) called "Whitcouls" but they are doing likewise with stores and in any case, with only 5m people, you can imagine how few wargamers there are here - so the mags were never something readily available

  4. Good results, Keith! Another usual purpose for blogging is gaining inspiration (and guilt) from others.

  5. Great to see some more AWI troops Keith, they look great. They look just like the 2nd Maryland to me and I dare anyone to dispute that with concrete evidence.

    1. Thanks Scotty...a couple of the units, I didn't even really assign them a real identity...they are just in uniforms that look like several of the ones in the Perry guide and other references I have!

  7. Fast work mate! And really, historic details aren't all that important as long as the general stuff is included. Also - they're your figs, so do what you want with them!

Looking forward to reading what happens during this dungeon delve!

  8. Very productive Keith, you’ve put me to shame again. I try to follow a nothing new till the last lots finished way of doing things but it’s damned hard when there’s so much great stuff out there to buy. I have to say that despite their copious detail I’ve found Perry’s stuff easy to paint on the whole.

    1. Thanks JBM! I must admit I found plastic figures a lot harder to paint initially, due to the lack of unrealisticly sharp edges on belts etc, but I have obviously adjusted my painting style to fit the plastic figures now!

  12. Lovely work on these splendid chaps, Ive no idea if theyre historically correct but they look the part, I do the strict painting only what I have regime, tgen the wheels come off after I buy something "I have to have" that I may or may not imediately lose interest in, but that's just me, Im sure youre made of sterner stuff!

    1. Thanks Iain....I doubt I am made of sterner stuff...I have a $120 PrezzyCard from my work Christmas present burning a hole in my pocket...and I have decided I "need" some winter Germans for solo games. A local supplier has the Warlord set available for $65, which is cheap (must be old stock) so I am worried that if I don't buy them soon, when I go to get them in a month or two, they will cost me $90! Maybe I will just buy them and not tell anyone 🤔....
