Work from the Painting Desk

I have been somewhat remiss in posting progress of late - not really sure why although I was waiting for the comment count on my last AAR to creep up a bit before posting again!

I have so far completed 9 of the 12 "Retinue" figures to accompany the Queens Progress when she takes an interest in the goings on of the borderers. A selection of foot types are hopefully en route from The Assault Group, although with Christmas AND Covid, who knows when they will arrive!

(A minor miracle, the images seem to have appeared in the correct order this time!)

The three command group figures - I noticed too late that the herald has the English cross of St George molded on his breast - so I just left it - the Scots were Christians too, after all!

Commander of the royal force

The bannerman

Herald in Scots livery of yellow and red

These are the three mounted calivermen

And these are the three swordsmen - pose 1 and 3 are disappointingly similar but they are nice clean sculpts

All very nice figures - I now only have the last three mounted figures armed with lances and this group will be complete. I do not believe there would have been much in the way of uniform at this time, so have painted them in a mix of colours, although I think I will make the foot troops look a bit more similar in style and colour.

  1. Keith, this latest batch of horsemen look terrific. The greys are especially nice.

As for comment count, I think three days is about the optimal duration to expect comments to come flowing into one post. After three days, only a few stragglers comment. That is my experience, anyway, and one reason I tend to space posts three days apart. Maybe I would see more comments if I stretched the number of days between posts out another day or so?

    1. Thanks Jonathan - yes, I agree in general, although perhaps this time of year people are busy with other things. I think after three days, I might have had 8 or 10 comments (including my replies) yet now its up at 22! I know it is a bit pathetic and FB like, but I do like to know the blog is worth writing...it sometimes surprises me which posts generate the most comment! Thanks for being first again this time - you generally seem to be in that position....

    2. Keith, where I am, we are mostly self-quarantining. Not so much personal, human interaction so fewer holiday events to schedule and juggle.

For me, receiving comments is a great motivator to keep plugging away at the keyboard. Comments do make the effort seem a worthy task. Each comment is a gift.

    3. Yes I agree about the motivating effect of comments Jonathan!

  2. Fine looking fellows all Keith.
I can understand not wishing to 'steal your own thunder', I have been 'guilty' of the same myself. It's funny 'cause you want to post the new stuff, but don't want the previous post to go to waste!
    Regards, James

  3. Those are lovely looking figures Keith and once again a great paint job:)

As for Blogging and comments etc, I am surprised as to what post may or may not elicit a lot of responses. There seems to be no rhyme nor reason to it. Any comments received are greatly appreciated and help me carry on with my AARs and musings.

    1. Thanks Steve, appreciate the compliment! I try to leave comments on any blog I visit although occasionally I can't think of anything good to say, so I say nothing! Once in a while, I see a blog with dreadful images of terrible figures and terrain, and I just quietly leave....but most gaming blogs have something I can be positive about.

  4. Nicely done Keith, these sculpts have plenty of character.

Comments ...... I used to care more about it than I do now. I have just come to accept that we live in an internet world of just click and move on. There is so much content to hoover up and not only is it free, but unfortunately it is treated as though it is free.

However, the behaviour is now so endemic that it's hardly worth thinking about, but thank goodness for those kind souls that do show a bit of interest, which does without doubt encourage further posting.

    1. Cheers Ray...100 plus?? I must have missed the heyday of blogging I think. My best ever has been 29 I believe and when I started I was lucky to get half a dozen.

  6. Lovely looking figures and great finish! I did plan on using some TAG figures for my Italian wars but it only seems to make sense if I buy quite a lot, maybe if I do another expansion?! It's nice to get comments but I don't think I'm as strategic as you and am somewhat more haphazard in what goes up to worry about timing! Glad to see the pictures are in the right order, working on a post, wish me luck!
    Best Iain

    1. Thanks Iain...TAG are certainly very nice figures although relatively expensive to my mind. I will take a look at your new blog shortly and see how you got on!

  7. Well done there Keith- splendid paint job- nice work. I tend to post about three to four days apart for optimal incoming comments. I consider myself lucky if I get five comments on a post- I've seen some sites where the writer has put in a huge effort -only to receive no comments at all. Hope your doing well Keith. Regards. KEV.

    1. Thanks Kev..looking forward to seeing your 15mm sci fi figures sometime soon. Yes, not much fun if you spend two hours loading a post then get two comments...although I am sure some bloggers don't care too much.

  9. Great work Keith. After having to invent and paint a few irregular colour combinations it is almost a relief to come back to something resembling a uniform.

    1. Yes I agree Lawrence ... I half wished I had made up a standard uniform for the retinue but too late now! The inanity will be in dull greys and blues etc

  10. Lovely retinue miniatures, Keith! I agree about a uniform, the absence of a uniform, to be precise :) so your approach is historically accurate.
