WIP - Red October Tank Factory

As alluded to in recent posts, I am still on a bit of a terrain building spree, using the ever trusty cork floor tiles as my medium.

Here are a few images of my 75% completed ruined factory for Stalingrad and similar locations. I will add in a few more exterior part walls plus a couple of internal ones to break things up a bit, as well as some "scatter" to fill up the inside of the building.

I am not sure yet whether I will base these on mdf/hardboard or leave them as is - having them on fixed bases may mean they take up more storage space?

I took the first batch of pics after Monday nights game

I have made the parts "modular", so if I need a smaller building, I can just use the four corners

Or, I could have two partial buildings comprised of three parts each...

I have since created four extra parts that can be added to each end and along each side, plus a four way ruined wall for inside

The last two images have some 28mm figures added, to give an idea of scale

Tonight, I pulled out a couple of the parts that I "enhanced" yesterday, courtesy of Google translate, "Paint" and our colour printer at work!

The name is "Red October Tank Factory"

A few propaganda posters added to the interior walls, aimed at motivating the workers to even greater efforts for the Motherland!

These were easy to source via Google searches, shrink down to size using Paint, then print out - I have a batch of German ones too for Berlin ruins - the only slight issue is, if I plaster the buildings with one sides posters or the others, it kind of limits their use - unless you just ignore it, of course!

Thats it for tonight - got a game on Sunday at Barry's and might even try and get another small solo in before that!

  1. Excellent looking modular factory! I've avoided posters for exactly that reason as I don't want to have seperate Stalingrad and Berlin building sets or I'll never get in the shed! I would be inclined to base them, if you stick close to the walls it won't take up much extra space and will protect them and give you a chance to carry over your basing scheme?

    1. Thanks Iain. I am inclined to agree with both your points regarding the posters and basing the parts. I don't even have a practical shed solution for storage, so I will have to stop the building work soon!

  2. Nice work Keith, storage is always a problem with terrain, it'd probably be more sturdy basing them up, but unfortunately there is no real answer what to do for the best?

    1. Thanks Ray, I think you are probably right that it would be best to add bases.....

  3. Cracking work Keith and a very handy set for your WW2 games. Modular scenery is always a winner for me, really useful.

    1. Cheers Donnie, I enjoy making this kind of terrain, but storage is definitely an issue!

  4. These looks really good Keith! Need lots of rubble piles, broken/or intact factory machinery and fallen gantry wrecks too to really go overboard on the theme.

    1. Yes I do Dai....considering buying some 28mm 3d printed machine tools from my mates at Temu!

  5. Lovely work on this Keith. I based a Gallic village on a single base and almost wish now I hadn't as it has limited its use, as you point out.

    1. Thanks Lawrence...I definitely won't base this on a 750mm x 500mm base or similar! But I may add something...as Ray pointed out, it will make the rather fragile cork tiles much sturdier....

    2. Looking good, Keith. Maybe don't make the bases too wide - ideally they will work well with all my Heroes System 2D urban ruin boards.

    1. Thanks a lot Ed....I do like those extra touches, but they come with a few fish hooks if you want to use the ruins in a specific location!

  7. Great looking ruins Keith. I agree a small base for each part would be more flexible than a single large base. The small base would still have some room for rubble, etc.

Maybe a bit late now. But if you glue on your first poster with thin magnetic sheet (like you get for fridge magnets) then a second poster on magnetic sheet could attach over it. Hope this makes sense.
They are a few mm's thick but may look ok.

    1. Thanks Ben and the temporary poster idea makes sense...I had thought of using blutak....a bit old school, I know, but that's how I roll!

    2. lol... blutak would be much easier than my way!

  8. You make even ruins look good! I like adding posters since they provide a lot of character. Not sure I would even notice that they were incorrect for the location. Berlin must have housed a few Bolshevik sympathizers.

    1. Thanks Jon, your advice re the posters would fall under my comment about just not worrying about which ones are on the ruins! I am sure you are right about Bolsheviks in Berlin - particularly in April 1945 - bit like the French Resistance in Paris, 1944?!

  9. Good looking terrain. The storage is a major consideration, but lending stuff out almost never works. If it's good it doesn't doesn't get returned.

    1. Thanks Joe...yep, storage space really is my major constraint these days....and never a borrower nor a lender be, eh?!

  10. Fantastic terrain Keith. Very versatile. Basing for extra strength is probably a must.

  11. Looks great so far. I’m sure you’ll figure out the basing or not. Seems like a big project! I’m struggling to just finish one house. 😀

    1. Thanks Stew, pretty sure I have decided I WILL base these. I probably have a lot more free time on my hands, given my "kids" are 24 (soon) and 26!

  12. Nice work Keith…
You could probably have a nice little skirmish just using that building on its own…

    All the best. Aly
