From The Painting Desk and Some More Holiday Snaps

The first few Bolt Action hard plastic WW2 winter Germans have been completed

There are six basic bodies, and a multitude of heads, arms, weapons and kit

I avoided using any late war stuff - MP44 etc - because I want to be able to use them from 1941 onwards

Officer pointing the way

Rifleman

MP38 gunner

Another MP38 "Schmeiser"

Rifleman

Charging with a grenade

Another four of these teams to come over the next wee while

Now onto day four of our S Island trip - we returned to Dunedin from Gore

Lake Waihola

Next stop was Tunnel Beach

A local father had the tunnel dug so his daughters could access the secluded beach for swimming

On to Dunedin city proper by mid afternoon

The famous Dunedin Railway Station

Some beautiful Victorian or Edwardian architectural details

Central Dunedin had quite a few attractive old buildings

The offices of Otago Daily Times (OTD) the local newspaper.

The "Octagon" - the centre of the business district, is mostly bars and restaurants nowadays

The main shopping street running off the Octagon

Next time, we head north to the Steam Punk capital of New Zealand - Oamaru.

    1. Thanks Donnie, I enjoyed putting these together and painting them. The lower S Island is a picturesque part of the world!

  2. Smart thinking on the krauts. Double bubble, or some such. The scenery was, as usual, stunning. That train station interior was gorgeous. I notice none of your waterways seem to harbour the lesser spotted traffic cone, the upturned shopping cart or old car tyres. It’s almost as though you value your environment down there?! I think we deserve some snaps of inner city graffiti to balance things out!

    1. Cheers JBM, I am too mean to do everything twice, and I don't like the idea of Germans armed with late war kit in the early war....we don't have a King Tiger in Barbarossa, do we?!
I think the general absence of waste is probably more to do with the sparseness of population density than any moral superiority...I will keep a look out for gang tags etc!

  4. I am really enjoying your travelogue featuring seascapes and architecture. The train station is fabulous! What a good dad to bore a hole through the rocks for his family's enjoyment. Oh, good looking Germans too!

  7. Great looking winter Germans, Keith. Wow! Dad had a tunnel dug to get to a private swimming area!? Now that's amazing, but would have to say, being from Hawaii, worth it!

    1. Thanks Dean....but was he a good dad, really? I had to laugh at the Dept of Conservation sign that says the beach is too dangerous to swim at...!

  9. The Germans look great Keith and a really like the pose of the officer. That father went to extraordinary lengths to keep his daughters away from the local boys.

    1. Thanks Lawrence....given the time frame, that is probably exactly why he had a tunnel built to a private, secluded beach!

  10. Great job on the figures Keith.

A wonderful station for Dunedin especially considering the population when it was built but it matches all the other elaborate architecture.

Reading Wikipedia about Dunedin got me thinking of a possible imaginations campaign. ..... "Dunedin grew during the early 20th-century via annexation of surrounding municipalities — between 1904 and 1916 Dunedin annexed the boroughs of Caversham, South Dunedin, North East Valley, Maori Hill, Roslyn, and Mornington as well as the Bay Town District. In 1963 West Harbour Borough was annexed by Dunedin and in 1968 it annexed the entire Peninsula County." 😂

    1. Lol....annexed seems a harsh word for local government amalgamation....but it does sound like something you could turn into a fin de siecle imaginary campaign!

    1. Cheers Matt, I will be interested to see your versions. I decided not too try to use the TINY decals for helmet marking and badges of rank, maybe you will be braver than me?
I read it was 21c in parts of the UK on Thursday, which is pretty warm for mid March.....
