Despite the lack of posting, I have actually got a fair bit done recently - just nothing completely finished - until this evening.
Fresh off the painting desk are the French Napoleonic 9eme Hussards, Warlord plastic with the customary metal officer and musician.
This is the last of my stock of cheap bargains from 12-18 months ago - they may even have been a birthday or Christmas present from one of my beautiful children - I can't recall now!
Again, probably not up to Perry standards but nicer than the Chasseurs a Cheval, I think?
I based these on the three horse plastic bases that come in the Perry packs
The elite company are, of course, in their fancy colpacks!

The yellow braiding was a bit of a hassle; I have rarely been able to find a "strong" yellow paint - and the ones I have currently certainly aren't!
Finally, I have also started work on some additions to the Russian Great Northern War forces. I have enough Warlord plastic infantry on hand for two, eighteen figure battalions - plus two boxes of horse, which equates to twenty four cavalrymen.
I decided to add these two regiments to the ten I already have for the Russkies
And here are two test figures, I am pretty happy with how these look. (although looking now, I see I have got the stockings wrong - easy enough to fix that up though!)

DeleteThank god someone else finds it hard to paint with yellow. Never had good coverage with it whatever brand I’ve used. Loving those cav chaps…some splendid moustaches on display. Very martial.
ReplyDeleteYe olde Humbrol enamel used to be ok, but I have never had much luck with any acrylic, JBM!
DeleteI do like the Warlord faces, I just find their poses a bit limited compared with the Perry figures.

DeleteI have never been happy with a yellow yet either. It is either too thick and cakes on, but mostly too translucent requiring a brown undercoat and three layers on top, which is a even more frustrating when it is piping or braiding. Great work on the hussars Keith, and the Russians.
ReplyDeleteIts irritating isn't it, Lawrence?! If yellow is a big feature of the uniform, I often paint the area white first - I had to do a lot of that with the GNW Swedes, many of whom wear blue coats faced yellow!
DeleteThe Great Northern War will be an interesting project. Its an interesting period and one I have thought about doing, but have never got around to.

Thanks Ben - it was a transition period I believe. when Peter the Great was creating a "modern" army dressed in Western European style uniforms, so they were going through a lot of changes!
DeleteVery nice work on the Hussars Keith, they look great and not bad looking figures either. Nice to see some more Ruskies for the GNW, interesting conflict I have my Swedish army nearly done but going for Saxons and Danes for opponents, the Warlord plastic infantry are handy figures.
ReplyDeleteThanks Donnie. Which figures did you use for the Swedes? Most of mine are Ebor - lovely Paul Hicks sculpts and excellent value - I like the look of the Warrior ones, but they are literally twice the cost!

DeleteFab looking Hussars Keith. And two nice test figures too. There's a lot of conflicting info there for uniform colours, did you choose a particular year from the lists or just go with the flow and pick one?

DeleteExcellent paint job, Keith. Yellow is always a problem. It's a bit of a faff, but I tend to put a coat of yellow ochre or something of a yellowish brown shade on first, so the yellow is not fighting too hard against a darker undercoat.
ReplyDeleteThanks Richard, yes, I have burnt ochre type colour I sometimes do that with or, as I mentioned above, I paint the cuffs or whatever white first, the put the yellow over that.

ReplyDeleteThanks Norm! A bit of a change for me, I have never used those three horse plastic bases before...my cavalry are almost all on 40mm by 40mm bases, two horses each, six to a regiment.
DeleteLovely work on those Keith:)! Yellow is a pain of a colour to paint, as I know from my time as a modelmaker, and one of the reasons you see very few yellow cars on the road. I've found that using a good yellow ochre basecoat works a treat, with the touch of the yellow you want over that, which seems to work OK at gaming distances...
