Butterfly Blown Off Course.....

I have painted six (of fifteen) US 1812 Militia and a further six have been under coated this evening, but....in the meantime....I felt an urge to paint a few more of the 3D WW2 Soviet girls, and here they are!

Reporting for duty - not quite sure what use I can make of this figure but I like the pose!

Kneeling sniper with scoped rifle

A blonde bomber with sticks of TNT tied together!

Standing sniper

Two views of the last figure, a kneeling pistol armed medic

I did not do the "whites of their eyes" this time - I may go back and change that, not sure. Below is some source material for anyone seeking inspiration for Soviet female figures - I watched this 6 or 8 part serial from Star Media right through on You Tube - its not a bad tale!

Its called " The Dawns here are Quiet"

Thats my lot for tonight - more 1812 figures soon, promise!

  2. More nice looking miniatures Keith…
I rather like the saluting soldier… she would work well as part of a command group…

    All the best. Aly

  4. Nice one. Not so much blown off course as just enjoying a brief diversion. Particularly like the explosive wielding lass…she’s err…dynamite…

    I’ll get my coat!

    1. Knees - so THATS why you weren't looking her directly in the eyes Mark??!

  6. Swapping painting time about between projects has always worked to keep interest up. Besides, it is fun to see disparate units completed, and is that not a satisfying result? 😉

  9. Great work there once again Keith, but I'm not sure what I'd do with the first figure, as her pose limits her use IMHO. I always have several projects on the go, to allow me to flit about to which ever one grabs my fancy. I find it helps preventing boredom with a project but does mean that many take years to complete.

    1. I don't always have a sufficient lead pile Steve but in recent months this has not been a problem!

  10. Cool figures! They came out nicely.
I’ve never bothered painting eyes. Too difficult. I always ended up with a heavy mascara look like in Pirates of the Caribbean. 😀

    1. Cheers Stew - yes the eyes can be a problem - sometimes doing them makes the figures look a bit odd, depends on how they are sculpted really. I have a tendency to put more effort into eyes on female figures as I think they add to the look...

  11. Lovely work Keith and an interesting series on YouTube. Is that Victoria Beckham in the bottom photo? I like to do the whites of the eyes as the first thing on 28mm figures, so I can paint around the eyes again and narrow them before applying the flesh and try to avoid that wide-eyed surprised look.

    1. Thanks Lawrence - that eye painting technique is interesting - I might give that a try - thanks for the tip!

  12. Great stuff, nope can't be doing with eyes - They always look like someone has jumped out from the wardrobe. :-)
Looks like you have started a right little argument on painting eyes.

    1. Cheers Stu, I have ebbed and flowed on my opinion of painting eyes over the years - but with female figures, I think its more of an issue than with the blokes - I need them to look attractive and eyes really add another dimension!

    1. Haha, thanks Matt - well, I have watched a couple of Russian movies on Youtube that would provide plenty of scope for skirmish level scenarios involving snipers!

  14. More great looking Heroines of the Soviet Union! The dawns are quite here was the name of a Soviet play I used to have set during the great patriotic war, must be what they based the TV series on,as the titles are so similar, you've been very productive lately with some lovely figures, I can't believe you're border reivers project is actually finished though!

    1. Thanks Ian - "finished" of course is a relative term but really, for what was intended to be a small scale skirmish game between 10-20 figures per side, I have painted far too many already - however, there are actually about half a dozen TAG foot Reivers still to paint and theoretically, I should also get mounted versions of my three "families" from Hokahey.....so watch this space!
The basic plot of the film is - male Sgt stuck in a back water of the war in charge of an AA unit has all his male gunners replaced by females. While one of them is out at night secretly visiting her child, she sees two German paratroopers. She reports to Sgt and he goes off in search with half a dozen of the girls - but there are actually about thirty Germans....sound like the same story?

    2. Hi Keith, yes ,same story, I was thinking of putting it on as it was a predominantly female course I was on,only trouble was the size of the cast and that the German paras would have been female too!
