A couple of days ago, a very small order from Noble Knight Games, in a rather large box!
I would guess this was a 0.01 or even 0.015m3 carton -
.....and inside all the packaging....
..... there were a total of FIVE 28mm figures!
One of these is by Gaddis Games and features Princess Viktoria Luise, the only daughter of the last Kaiser of Germany
The late, lamented Hinterland Miniatures also did a figure of the Princess, together with her sister-in-law Princess Cecile, the wife of the Crown Prince, sporting a dragoon uniform.
The figure surprised me when it arrived, as its cast in metal. I had assumed from the image that it would be 3D printed resin. The actual figure has a slightly different pose, no gap between the body and the left arm, and the baton of office is held against the body and up the rear of the arm - to make it easier to cast and less susceptible to damage, I imagine.
Here are a few images showing where the inspiration for this figure (and the Hinterland ones) came from.
The Kaiser and his daughter, circa 1912
Colonel of the 2nd Leib Hussar Regiment
The colourised version below is incorrect, as all the lace etc should be silver, and the Colpack bag is white, not red
The two sisters in law, mounted
Hussar on the left, dragoon on the right
The colours on the hussar uniform worn by the princess have been represented more accurately in this image.
I have several different batches of figures nearing completion on the painting table but they can wait for another couple of days before being revealed.
Thanks for stopping by and (hopefully) leaving a comment - take care of yourselves and stay well!
A lot of packaging for 5 figures, but that figure for Princess Viktoria Luise looks superb
ReplyDeleteIt certainly was a very adequately packaged consignment Neil! The figures is almost as nice as the computer-generated image!
DeleteA padded envelope would have done that lot nicely you'd have thought. These should look great painted up Keith.
ReplyDeleteExactly Lawrence. I do feel suppliers just do what is easiest for themselves when it comes to freight options - they could easily have sent those five figures for a lot less than the $US16 it cost - that basically doubled the price of the figures and left them costing me about $NZ10 each....ah well, no one forced me to buy them, I guess!
DeleteGreat looking design, thats a lot of packaging I look forward to them painted up!
ReplyDeleteBest Iain
Thanks Iain - the actual figure is pretty close to how the image looks and very simple to paint - basically all black with white edging on the jacket and all the lace in silver.
DeleteExcellent background on the subject. After a tease like that, figures almost ready to reveal, one can only hope for another post, soon.
ReplyDeleteGlad you enjoyed the little bit of background fluff Joe - and yes, should have a post with some painted figures in a day or two :)
DeleteVery nice indeed - but what do you have planned for the princess?
ReplyDeleteThanks JBM! Mostly, I just thought it was a cool figure to paint, but I think she could probably find a supporting roll in the RCW or Pulp Era collections? The Romanov princesses also appeared in military uniforms on occasion!
DeleteGlad you have received your Order Kieth and are pleased with the figures- my 6mm Baccus Order arrived from England to-day (24 Days after ordering). I'll be painting my first order to-morrow. Cheers. KEV.
ReplyDeleteThanks Kev and good news on your Baccus order. Three to four weeks seems to be about standard from UK or US at present. I look forward to seeing some of your little men painted up!
DeleteBeautiful looking figure. Looking forward to seeing it painted. I had no idea anyone did these!
ReplyDeleteThanks Mark. From memory, Gaddis Games are in Michagen. They have quite a big range of WWI and WWII figures. I also bought a Rasputin figure from them, and another personality figure they do is Mackensen, the so called Last Hussar.
DeleteNice figure, but what a stupid box?
ReplyDeleteIt did seem excessively large Ray...that's what they did last time I ordered from them too. If they can send this size for $16, it makes me wonder if they could halve the size and halve the postage cost.....?
DeleteSuper sculpt and very interesting bio.
ReplyDeleteThanks Jon...it's amazing what weird and wonderful things one can find on the Web!
DeleteI recall seeing the pix of the Princess in the Totenkopf rig. Wasn't aware of the Dragoon daughter!
ReplyDeleteThanks Ed. Cecil's was the wife of the Kaisers eldest son, so the Crown Princess....I think she may have been from the Danish Royal family? The marriage of Viktoria Luise to the Duke of Brunswick in 1913 was the last big royal wedding event in Europe, prior to the outbreak of WWI.
DeleteReally nice looking stuff sir! Can't wait for see them painted :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks Michal....I will try not to disappoint, although I am sure you would be able to do the princess more justice than I will be able to!
DeleteGreat looking figures. They will be fun to paint.
ReplyDeleteThank you Ben...they were...see a new post shortly!
DeleteExcellent packaging Keith…have to do something to prevent the courier from damaging the figures, eh?
ReplyDeleteThat's a insanely large package for so few figures! Aside from that, the cad image looks brilliant and I look forward to seeing the figures painted up. Nice figures to add variety to your games:).
ReplyDeleteThanks Steve, the figure isn't quite as good as the cad images, but it's still very nice.
DeleteNothing like a woman in a nice uniform.
ReplyDeleteI usually prefer maid uniforms or flight attendants but to each their own. 😀😀
Lol, I do have a couple of maids in the collection Stew, as you will have seen in the most recent Pulp game....no flight attendants (so far) but I have a real one in the family!
DeleteThat box is packed in exactly the same way my goodies arrive from Noble Knight!
ReplyDeleteI am a little surprised to note the lack of any Minairons boxes in the shipment...
I am sure it's just standardised packaging Greg, three sizes fit all orders and this is the smallest they do. I have purchased my Minairons figures direct from Lluis in Spain. Being in NZ, the shipping costs are not really any worse from Europe than from the US. Some more Minairons is on the to do list but I feel the SCW collection is almost complete at this stage.
DeleteI shall look into ordering direct from Minairons, especially as the exchange rate is quite good for the US.
ReplyDeleteI would suggest, when placing your next order with NK, that you take a look at their Minairons stock. NK has a very strange pricing structure, where some boxes - Militiamen - are very expensive but others are much less so.
Ok great tip, thanks for that Greg, I will check it out!
