ECW Parliamentarian Foot Completed

I recently finished off the last nine figures (three bases of musketeers) for Colonel Thomas Ballard’s Regiment of Foot, a Parliamentarian regiment of the English Civil War period..

Not a lot more to say - Warlord plastic figures, donated by my mate Rick, who had assembled them but could not find the motivation to paint them (he isn't really a fan of plastic figures). I on the other hand quite like them and could easily consider doing more....but I have more than enough ECW figures already! I do have a bit of an hankering to do the New Model Army (basically all red coats with different facing colours) but I probably won't as they would just sit in a box for years, unused, in all likelihood!

Very happy with how these have turned out - next time, a small solo game! Thanks for your visit and double thanks if you leave a comment!

PS, in mitigation of my probable faux pas with the Vastgota Cavalry Regiment having orange facings, I offer the following in evidence - the facing colours looked orange to me, but perhaps the artist intended a sort of dark, off colour yellow?

  1. Fine looking regiment, Keith! Perhaps Vastoga’s yellow facings faded to orangish on campaign? Well, that is the excuse I would use.

  2. Great job Keith. Warlord plastic is very good! I liked the flag of the regiment.

  5. Orange, buff, tan, it's all the same. ECW figures look excellent!

  6. I have just finished some musketeers for some grey-coated parliamentarian foot myself, so enjoyed these. Great work Keith. I'd stick with the orange. You always hear stories of different dye lots, so it is often a lot of guesswork as to what they looked like in the field anyway.

    1. Thanks Lawrence....re the facing colour, the other option is just rename them; there is another regiment called the Meijerfeld Dragoons who are listed as having orange facings...but I will probably leave them as is, I hate rework....that's why I never rebase anything!

    1. Thanks Norm. My ECW troops have been on the table in relatively recent times, when Julian was keen on FK&P, and part of the deal with Rick was, he would give them to me, but I had to turn up at a Sunday ECW game and use them!

  8. Nicely done Keith I’m sure they may have had colour match issues back then so orange, yellow all the same ?

  9. Fine looking fellows Keith…
There are so many different names for the myriad of different shades of yellow (and many other colours)… I think your Rich golden yellow facings look fine 😁

    All the best. Aly

  10. Orange, yellow whatever close enough is good enough in my book! Pike and shot chaps look good I've been given a load of assembled warlord Pike and Shot figures, guess I have to bite the bullet and do Montrose's army, sigh, tartan!

    1. Thanks Iain. Montrose, my home town(although I think the great mans connection was tenuous). Don't go overboard on the tartan, not everyone in Scotland wore it!
Fun fact, Montroses family town house in Montrose was the unemployment benefit office when I was young!

  11. Nice work on these ECW Warlord Games figs, Keith. I also like plastic figures - and have buddies who've given me theirs after deciding they are pure lead enthusiasts. I find putting together plastic kits quite enjoyable; especially figures that have optional arms/poses, etc.

    1. Thank you Dean. The only brand of plastic figures I wasn't keen on are Victrix. They had TOO many options and lots of small, fiddly parts to assemble....like Tamiya but in 28mm! The figures themselves are fine, they are just a hassle to put together, in my opinion.

  12. Very smart looking ECW unit! Whilst I have many plastic minis, I am like your mate who prefers metals. Maybe I'm a groggard afterall.

    1. Cheers Dai. I gues, overall, I prefer metal roo....but I am happy to use plastic when the sculpting quality is equal and cost significantly less!

  13. Oh, let’s not get hung up on proper face colors now. This isn’t AWI or maps is it? 😀
    Nice looking miniatures as usual.

    1. That's a typical ACW point of view there Stew...as long as the coat is either Blue or Grey, you have accurate uniforms! We Europeans have just a little bit more finesse when it comes to military fashion!

  15. Very nicely done Parliamentarians!
You are correct, the facings were orange because the Olsson dyers got their mixtures wrong for the Vastoga order. Erik Olsson was colour blind and was a notoriously cranky boss who would never listen to his apprentices. They lost the regimental contract after this disaster but luckily ended up making a fortune in Holland!

  16. A fine unit there Keith, whether the facings colours are correct or not!
