Odds and Sods....plus. An Announcement!

Tonight, I have a few images of various bits and pieces that have been completed recently on my painting desk. Talk about a "wargamers butterfly" - I can't even stick to one project when I am painting at the moment - a new shiny thing turns up, and I feel compelled to pick them up!

I don't think I posted these earlier - if I did, my apologies.

Warlord Games plastic ECW

They are intended to represent Sir Thomas Ballards Parliamentarian Regiment of Foot.

Colonel Thomas Ballard’s Regiment of Foot

Later Colonel Francis Martin’s Regiment of foot

Parliamentarian Regiment of Foot serving under the Earl of Essex from 1642 to 1644. Then in garrison at Aylesbury

Service History
1642
23rd September: Battle of Edgehill
13th November: Standoff at Turnham Green?
1643
April: Siege of Reading?
8th September: Relief of Gloucester
20th September: First Battle of Newbury
1644
April: Colonel George Langham’s Regiment of Foot reduced into the regiment
May: Garrison of Aylesbury
1645
October: Disbanded
Notes
Originally raised for service in Ireland before being drafted into the Earl of Essex's Army. Ballard left the regiment in Aug 1643 to take up a command in the midlands and the regiment was taken over by its Lt-Col Francis Martyn. From May 1644 to October 1645 the regiment formed the garrison of Aylesbury. A few of the officers seem to have been continued in pay until spring 1646.

Coats, Flags and Equipment
Wore grey coats lined white from September 1642 receiving a new issue in August 1643 that was probably red or grey.

I still have the musketeers to complete for this regiment.

Next up is the first of the 20mm female Chetnik fighters that I recently received from Stonewall Figures in Truro

I think the figure has turned out quite well.

I am still not sure what I will do with them, but they are nice sculpts and paint up well without too much effort!

Finally, for the show and tell, I have assembled and painted the first three of the Warlord plastic WSS cavalry I received recently, to finish off one of the GNW Swedish cavalry units I started a couple of years ago! I am pretty sure this is the Ostgota Regiment.

The full unit above

These are the new additions

The remaining figures are partially assembled (all the horses are done, plus three of the nine riders) So the final Swedish cavalry unit should be completed in the next week I hope (unless the butterfly wings flutter distractingly in the meantime!)

NOW - the ANNOUNCEMENT!

After much soul searching (not to mention searching a hundred different figure selling sites on the web!) I have given in and decided to add to my GNW collection - by purchasing my own Russians! A decent order has gone in to Nick at Ebor as below, and in due course (who knows how many weeks hence?!) I should receive six battalions of infantry and two gun crews.

I did look at Barry Hilton's Warrior figures, but they are almost twice the price, so although they are undoubtedly lovely figures, I will reserve those for specialist groups (senior officers etc). I may even buy a few packs of the command figures and add them to the more cost-effective Ebor enlisted men....

So, a new round of madness begins, and I have already done some research on which of the multitude of Russian regiments I will paint up - uniform variety and attractiveness obviously being high amongst the decision-making criteria! I have also sourced a batch of GNW Russian flags via Google that should be more than I ever need for this collection!

Righty ho, that's my news for tonight! Thanks for dropping by and leaving a comment, all visits and particularly comments are sincerely appreciated!

    1. Cheers Matt! It's a decent number of figures at one time, by my standards...six, eighteen figure battalions, plus the eight gunners, so 116 in total, if my mental arithmetic is right! That should keep me busy most of our winter, you are right!

  2. You've been busy! I really like Ballard's regiment. Great colour.

  4. You are keeping up a very high rate of production. Fielding Russians to face your Swedes is a smart move. Looking forward to watching a Russian army develop.

    1. Paise indeed, coming from you Jon! I am not sure about smart, but if I want the Swedes to get a game this decade, I think doing the Russians myself was necessary!

  9. That is quite a variety Keith, and being on a recent ECW push myself I especially like Thomas Ballard's Regiment, but it all looks terrific. The GNW Russians are a lovely army, so I'll be looking forward to seeing what you do with them.

    1. Thanks Lawrence...I think the donor of the figures mentioned he had been intending them to be clothed in grey, so that was what I did! My challenge with the Russians will be, not to expand the collection exponentially!

  10. Those Russians will look very pretty! (Heroes of Normandie: Caen has cleared customs and should be here by the weekend - might be a game on next week......... maybe)

    1. Hi Andrew. Re the Russians, yes I hope so! Good news re Heroes of Normadie...I have a whole lot of Brits ready and waiting! A game would be good as Mr Bell is in Europe for 6 weeks or more and I have been reduced to playing solo in the garage!

  11. Excellent job on the figures, as usual, and very much appreciate the regimental history of the ECW unit! The GNW is an attractive era, no doubt about it. Looking forward to seeing your Russians.

  12. Hey Keith- love the ECW unit.! The WSS Plastics are something I haven't tried- are they worth the time and effort? .You've also ordered a full Russian army? If your comments on my blog are anything to go by....you're going to need a lot !! I'm amazed at how many figures you get through!

    1. Hey John, as a Scot, 12 cavalry for £20 is definitely worth it! Seriously though, cavalry have about 15 parts each...4 for the horse, rest for the rider, but i do think they are worth the effort to be honest. Looking forward to getting to grips with a few Russians!

  13. A nice mix of units as always Keith. I used to enjoy the ECW but lately have moved more towards the Glorious Revolution, due in part to living near to where a lot of the 'action' happened. As for the GNW, I'm looking forward to seeing how this progresses. IIRC there are a couple of superb Swedish books, but they are rather expensive, but full of info.

  14. Thanks Steve - the Monmouth/Glorious Revolution is a period I have considered too - playing the recent games around the Battle of the Boyne sparked my interest again, and Front Rank, still one of my favourite ranges, does some really nice figures for the era - perhaps that will be the next project after the GNW Russians?!
This may be the book you are referring to? Hoglund Lars Eric · SWEDISH COLOURS AND STANDARDS OF THE GREAT NORTHERN WAR 1700-1721 · GREAT NORTHERN WAR 1700 - 1721 - Volume 1 and 2? As it happens, I managed to pick up pdf copies of both, and have scanned through them both - this web site is also very useful for info on the GNW https://www.tacitus.nu/gnw/

  15. Great job! The miniatures are very good! The 17th century is my favorite historical period. As for the Great Northern War, let me remind you that the Russian Moscow, Kiev, Butyrsky regiments wore red uniforms, Semenovsky - light blue, Kazan - blue, the rest - green with different colors of stockings, cuffs and linings. This is for the first half of the war. Sincerely.

    1. Thank you Valentine, and welcome to my blog! Yes, the Russian uniforms of the GNW are very colourful with lots of variety. I am spoiled for choice, that's for sure!

    And lovely toys…
I remember seeing a picture of a Spanish Republican soldier in a Russian style fur hat…. I am sure they would have been supplied/worn.

  18. For a second there I thought the big announcement was that you commissioned a new line of miniatures for the GNW. 😀
    I see it’s more sane.
Your painting output is going strong and it all looks really good.
Only us serious war gamers do both sides of the conflict. 😀

    1. Well, maybe not QUITE, Mark, given the Russians need to outnumber the Swedes by 2 or 3 to 1 (according to Nick, and he has read the rules!) Mr. Shanks did express a cautious interest, so maybe he will join the project and add some more Russian battalions to the count.....

    2. The period appeals to me too, but I gave other projects to complete first...maybe after retirement

    3. I remember you talking about the GNW about ten years ag, Mark...I had no idea what it was at the time! the more the merrier as far as I am concerned!
