Nick and I were the only takers for a Friday evening game at Julians this week. Our host reprised the commando assault on a strategic bridge "somewhere in Normandy" post D Day, using the ruleset "Nuts" - and this time, all three players were the good guys, with the rules "AI" running the Germans (one of the players still had to roll the dice for them, of course)
A much more successful outing for Lord Lovat (or Brig Peter Young?!) - mainly because the defending Germans were seriously under resourced on this occasion - there is nothing particularly heroic or tactically brilliant about twenty heavily armed commandos being able to take a position defended by two German privates armed with a Panzerschreck, for example (that was what Julian and I achieved - yay!)
Nick had a little bit more to deal with on the other side of the river but even there, the defending force was seriously out gunned.
The Germans did get two reinforcements, but too little in the case of the first batch, although they did use grenades to take out a couple of Nicks command, and too late with the batch that turned up on Julian and my side of the river.
I took some pics and will add a few comments, but it was a pretty pedestrian game really, the Brits had all the advantages and once Nick got used to the rules, he had all the defending Germans suppressed then wiped out with grenades on about the third turn, with me quickly following suit against the hopelessly outnumbered pair of Germans opposing Julian and me!
"Somewhere in Normandy, June 1944"
My command above and below
The formidable force defending the south side of the bridge
A slightly larger but still underwhelming defence force on the northern bank
Commandos moving stealthily along the Norman bocage
Nick has meanwhile "suppressed" all the enemy opposing his unit.
The first German reinforcements turned up adjacent to Nick (his force was on the other side of the bocage in front of the Germans above)
With all the defending Wehrmacht men cowering under cover, two plucky commandos raced forward, and hurled in a couple of grenades
With the following result! The officer ended up as a PoW shortly thereafter.
A couple of my commandos pulled the same trick and wiped out the Panzerschreck team!
More German reinforcements arriving to the left of my position. There were quite a few of them and they were well armed, with a couple of MP44 assault rifles and one man carrying a rifle grenade.
The Scharfuhrer in charge
By this time, all my commandos were in the southern defensive position, whilst most of Nicks survivors were in the northern one. Julian was deployed in the bocage adjacent to me.
The small German squad near Nicks original position were reduced by one, but they had managed to kill two or three of Nicks guys.
The larger reinforcement moving towards the sound of the guns .... but cautiously!
After taking fire from a couple of Julians riflemen, and losing one guy armed with an MP38, the Germans moved off the road into the cover of the bocage.
My commandos were ready for them....
A rifle grenade had half my guys "duck back" into cover.
But with twenty defenders against nine attackers, and both sides of the bridge securely held by the commandos, we decided to call time on this game.
Not the most exciting contest ever, due mainly to the fact there were too few German defenders to make taking control of the bridge much of a challenge, but on the positive side, Julian, Nick and I were all winners!
I had an anniversary day solo game earlier today, so will be reporting on that in a couple of days' time - till then, take care y'all! (And thanks for visiting)
If you're going to have a one-sided game, it's probably best you're all on the same side. An entertaining report nonetheless Keith.
ReplyDeleteYes, indeed Lawrence - last time, I ran the defending Germans, and gave the commandos a really bloody nose, including killing Lord Lovat outright - I don't think running last night's German force would have been quite as entertaining!
DeleteTake the win, you could always get a game going the other way. Nice table and figures, and everyone who showed won. Now that is worth blogging about.
ReplyDeleteGreat positive attitude there Joe....you are right, of course!
DeleteMaybe not the most exciting of games but a good looking table and some lovely miniatures make up for it and getting a game in is always good.
ReplyDeleteThanks Donnie, my feelings exactly!
DeleteSounds like you guys still had a good time, in spite of the one-sided results. I never played those rules, but recall it was pretty popular when it came out.
ReplyDeleteThank you Dean...any game is better than none and it's very rare we see Nick, other than occasionally at a Sunday game, so that was a bonus too. I do like the rules, but they are very process driven...lots (and lots) of different tables to consult.
DeleteNot the most fun game by the sound of it, but it sometimes happens like that in games. I've played in a few in my time and maybe one reason I moved away from skirmish level actions. Still lots of eye candy to enjoy though:).
ReplyDeleteThanks Steve...and yes, the terrain and figures still made it worth doing a post I think.
DeleteLooks a great game and a wins a win!
ReplyDeleteCheers Ray....great minds......!
DeleteBetter to have a game than not. The table looked good and you probably enjoyed each others company. Plus, you all won!
ReplyDeleteAll very true Richard, thanks!
DeleteSounds like the heart of the game was supposed to be a race between taking the positions and then holding out against the counterattack. You guys were just too good and seized all the objectives in short order!
ReplyDeleteThanks Ed, the Germans were just a bit under strength in this instance, but then, perhaps their forces are designed to oppose a lot fewer attackers...."Nuts" starts off one campaign with each player literally having a single paratrooper, with the aim of linking up and exiting the table unharmed....three units of ten is quite a large force for the rules to handle!
DeleteGreat looking game sir!
ReplyDeleteThanks Michal - the terrain and figures come out very nicely in my photos!
DeleteGreat looking game Keith and a win as well.
ReplyDeleteWhen writing the AAR you are meant to say it was two squads of Germans and an 88mm gun 😂 Makes you all sound much more heroic and clever.
Haha - I don't think I have ever been accused of being too honest before Ben, it's a new experience!
DeleteA nice looking game Keith…
ReplyDeleteOkay not a toe to toe down to the last bullet situation…
But an evening hanging out with your friends… Rolling Duce and pushing toys around… and a victory… what’s not to like 😁
All the best. Aly
Thanks Aly - you are correct, of course! My underwhelming introduction was more by way of an apology to my readers for the lack of excitement - but there again, every so often you have to watch a 0-0 midweek draw, in the rain!
DeleteBTW, I think I have seen that movie "Rolling Duce"...no, wait - that was "Robbing Mussolini"! LOL!
