A Friday Night Game

Friday at Julians was a small-scale fantasy/pirate type game organised by Andrew, using some of Julian's Zombicide tiles to define the area of play. Chris, Julian and I ran a band of "pirates" each, and Andrew ran the "monsters"

Here are the pics with a few notes added

My band - its the first outing for my 3 Musketeers "Lady de Winter" figure!
The two musket armed pirates are on loan from Andrew.

The area of operations

All hedges and walls could be "stepped over" at no cost with the exception of the T shaped "crypt" in the centre, with the four doors to define it.

Julians pirate crew - most of the figures were supplied by Andrew

Within a few minutes of starting, the skellies were on Julians trail

The Vampire Queen who was concealed within the crypt, and who was the target of our quest.

Julians band in close combat with the guardians of the crypt

But wait, there more ......!

The Vampire Queen with one hit token

Julian spent the entire game fending off the pursuing enemy - they came on randomly, but every random throw Andrew made, they turned up in Julians part of the table!

The Vampire Queen restored to full health!

My group charge in to confront Her Evilness

Most of my group were pushed back with wounds!

But we went again, and combined with Chris, were able to force the Evil One to fall back, but she was surrounded with no escape route and therefore was eliminated!

Julian in the meantime, having lost his leader and half his force, was still battling the undead!

As we had arrived and started early, the first game was over before 7pm - so we had dinner and reset for a second outing

We all took the same squads of pirates

Chris searching for the key to open the doors to teh crypt

The doors are opened to reveal the Vampire Queen and one attendant skelly

Once again, the "randomly generate" monsters appeared behind Julian - these female beasties were particularly potent, as they had a +2 added to any roll they made- and there were five of them!

We should have killed the Vampire Queen here, but Chris deliberately DIDNT block its exit - because he is like that!

As a result, she managed to survive and escape my group!

But it was a short-lived reprieve

On four hits and caught between me and Julian, she had no escape route and was once more sent spiralling into the fires of the undead abyss!

These were two quick, fun games with lots of laughs. Julian was incredibly unlucky, having to deal with virtually all the ghouls and monsters in both games, much to our amusement.

Now here are a few images of completed stuff from the weekend painting desk ....................

Battle Honours 3D Red Army winter HMG team

I have one more of these to do and will vary the coats and hats

And the first (of six!) winter mortar crews

I think this was an error at the suppliers end as I am sure I only ordered one pack of three.

Mortars are particularly effective in the rules we use for WW2, so six on the table at one time is unlikely to happen!

Despite the two-man crew and weapon being a single print, I did not find painting them too much of a problem

I have two more in grey coats and hats with white fur 90% completed, then I will do the other three in olive/khaki coats and grey or brown fur hats, for some variety

Finally, a few images of the RCW 3D printed Lanchester armoured cars bought off Temu for $NZ16 each - approx US$12 or GBP 7

I am very happy with how these have painted up

A couple of images with Artizan and Copplestone figures

And finally, an image of my high tech (not!) photo booth!

I think that is probably plenty for one day - I do have a solo WW2 skirmish AAR to do but will leave that for a few days. Thanks for your visit (assuming you find this post, the last couple have been down on comments due to the vagaries of Blogger that Jon on PWJ discussed in a recent post.....)

  1. The games really looked like they were good fun Keith, lovely figures used as well. Your Russian HMG and mortars team look great, very nicely done. Must admit those armoured cars look great and at that price you can't go wrong, great models and well painted.

  3. That looks like another fun. Friday nights seem to bring you a lot of variety. Your photo booth setup is very effective as the pictures always seem to turn out well.

    1. Yes, indeed Lawrence - too much variety sometimes, it might be nice to play the same period/rules for two or three sessions occasionally!
It's a real "Jerry built" set up but it does the job!

  6. Great looking figures for that game Keith, but poor old Julian didn't catch a break! Love the newly painted figures, but overkill on the mortar front, but when dealing with the Fascist Beast, who cares;)! Those armoured cars are fantastic value at about £7.00 a pop and always look very cool too:).

  8. Sounds like a great fun game, unless you were Julian! Great looking armoured cars and soviets, and yes my last post seems to barely be noticed which is odd!

    1. Cheers Iain - my latest post did not appear on PWJ immediately, but it was only an hour or two until I could see it.
The issue does restrict views and visitors though - I can see in mine, on average I was getting around 300 views per post, the more recent couple, it was only about half that, and comments were down by around the same proportion

  9. Great looking figures all around, Keith. I particularly like the lady swords-women in the first image. Your Soviet additions are also very nice!

  10. That is a very impressive mat. I think these sort of games have a lot more resonance when the visuals are good.

    1. Thanks Norm. Andrew generally prefers to use these kind of tiles for his non historical games and I agree with you, they add a little something to the experience.

  11. Fun looking games there. Especially good idea to use the tiles from zombicide too. I’ve been having blogger problems too btw. Doesn’t show up on Google searches half the time for some reason.

  12. While I have yet to be drawn to Zombie games, I certainly can see that they could provide some entertaining and hilarious moments. your Russian depots continue cranking out men and materiel at a rapid pace. Good stuff!

    2. Yeh I saw that on ebay, they also do a giant elastic band, where you can fling grenades of Molotov cocktails...haha!! Not sure they're in Bolt Action rules???

    3. I am sure you could work something out between Lee and you...make it like a grenade with twice the distance!

  14. Great and fun game there Keith. Surely Julian got the MVP prize for dealing with all the monsters 😂

The Soviets like their artillery so six mortar teams is probably about right.

    1. That's a fair point, Ben!
Personally, I have nothing against having 6-8 mortars on the table at the same time - but anyone on the opposite side may not be so sang froid about it!

  16. Fun sounding games! Sounded like there were plenty of hijinks to keep all involved entertained.

I like the new teams and Armoured Cars too. Was a little worried seeing them as bare prints, but painted up they look fine.

    1. Cheers Dai - the Friday game was fun and not to be taken too seriously!
Glad you like the 3D prints. Several people expressed the feeling that painting the mortar teams would be a hassle as they were a single print, but I didn't find it that hard to be honest
