Plastic Great Northern War Cavalry Completed

So here are the four squadrons/bases of the charging Warlord cavalry. Each box of 12 contains 6 charging and 6 standing/walking horse poses, so two packs allowed me to do 4 bases of each, with three cavalry on a 60mm x 60mm base.

To be honest, I dont think these photos do them justice - they look better in real life at normal "wargaming" range viewing than they seem to here in close up. I am still weighing up whether to grab a couple more boxes of these or maybe get the cavalry brigade deal from Nick at Ebor. He does a fantastic deal where you pay £105 and get 60 cavalry, a saving of £40 - but I am not sure I am ready to invest so heavily in cavalry for a period I am likely to play only very occasionally....there is a smaller unit deal for I think 36 cav that I might go for.....

The first infantry regiment is also nearing completion so they should put in an appearance here in a few days....stay tuned!

For the Swedish cavalry, blue facings on blue coats seem to have been a popular combination - not the most exuberant or exciting nation, Sweden!

  1. Keith, very nice and I fully understand you comment about pictures not matching how nice things look in ‘real life’. I don’t know why that is, but is certainly a truth.

    1. Thanks Norm. I can usually manage to produce a reasonable image in "studio" conditions , but these figures just didn't seem to look their best.

  3. Nice work, Keith! Your photos look good to me. I see your leaping stallion is now jumping a hedge. That is a good addition. Does this prevent the base from abutting another from the rear? Sixty cav for BP105 seems like a GREAT deal. How can you pass up such a bargain?

    1. Thanks Jon...Yes! I took advice from one reader (Lawrence I think?) and added a small piece of mdf to the front of the base then covered it in flock. It does now protect the figure from any adjacent base. I'm not sure I need 28 squadrons of cavalry...8 just completed plus another 20 if I had )60 more to pant!

  4. I for one greatly enjoy your pictures of your collections. The Cavalry look fantastic and I look forward to the project growing.

And yes, go for the extra figures.

    1. Than you Mark....my mate Nick is keen for me to go that way too! Another consideration is the Swedish army was ato und one third cavalry...if I have that many of them, how many more infantry units will I have to buy? This is what we call scope creep!

    1. Yes its a bargain...but still over $200 NZ ..plus I am guessing something like £35 or £40 postage on top.....and I don't really need sixty cavalrymen ....do I ?!

  7. Those look lovely Keith and I know what you mean about the photos not showing how nice a unit can look in real life. Taking good photos is an art in itself. As for extra cavalry, the deal look too good to pass up and any spare could be used for IamgiNations games etc.

    1. Thanks Steve...I am starting to understand why so many wargames have an enormous lead pile....!

  9. Lovely work Keith and they look great assembled together. Unfortunately I'd be one of those going for the deal, as when you play your first game you'll probably be wishing you had a few more.

    1. Thanks Lawrence - you are hardly a good example for me to follow - how many unpainted armies is it you have in storage - over 40 I believe?!

    2. Yes, but I have been very disciplined so far this year. I was in Melbourne at the start of the week and had to meet a customer for coffee in Hughesdale, and found myself right outside Eureka Miniatures. They have some lovely 15mm Samurais I had been thinking about a few months ago, but luckily they were closed.

  10. Pics never look as good as the actual miniatures. But these look good to me. I do like the blue and yellow.
And you’ve been very productive lately. 😀
