Here is the first of three elements of the Vastmanlands Regemente, the ninth infantry unit of a planned twelve (at this stage!) in my Great Northern War project. As usual, I have painted up the central command base, with an officer, two ensigns and the three pikemen. This unit is pretty much standard blue uniform faced yellow, but with blue stockings and the Karpus hat rather than tricorn (except for the officers) Once again, this regiment carries a rather attractive looking regimental colour!
And finally - confirmation that I have been swayed by public opinion.....well, the opinions of the fifteen or twenty regular visitors to this blog.... and have ordered the full £105, 60 figure cavalry deal from Nick at Ebor Miniatures....oh, I am sooooo looking forward to painting SIXTY horses....!
You rate of production is superb, you should have something really meaty to show for your efforts by the end of the year …… including of course 60 horse :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks Norm. I paint for an hour or two most nights and depending on what elate we are doing, can spend half of Saturday and Sunday at the painting desk too, so generally can produce one to one and a half new units per week. The horses may take a bit longer ....
DeleteThat's the way to do it! Paint a little, often.
DeleteAnother fine looking stand! The flags for the Swedes are terrific and the size magnificent. Sixty horses is a BIG task. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteThanks Jon. I have made these flags slightly larger than I usually do, to try and match my eventual Russian opponent Nick, who spends as much time and money on his flags as he does on his troops!
DeleteGreat looking Swedish command stand! I'm quite enjoying painting cavalry at the moment, as I do lots of horses really rapidly and then spend a bit more time on the riders!
ReplyDeleteBest Iain
Cheers Iain. Maybe I should try painting the horses first, en masse, then add the unpainted rider and paint them up...?
DeleteSixty horses will bring you into wargaming Valhala. You can do it!
ReplyDeleteHahaha, thanks Joe! Most of my armies are distinctly low on cavalry numbers, so it will be nice to have an army with a full complement!
DeleteAnother great looking regiment in the works, Keith! I'm very impressed with your cavalry order too!
ReplyDeleteThanks Dean...impressed is one word, scared or intimidated might describe my feelings...but I will just have to knuckle down when they arrive!
DeleteOh I say vicar, those are lovely:) As for painting sixty cavalry figures, I don't envy you one bit!
ReplyDeleteLol cheers Steve....as I have just replied to Dean, I just need to take the cavalry one base at a time...I will work my way through them!
DeleteGreat fun following this project. The regiments are wonderful looking.
ReplyDeleteThanks Mark, I am having fun painting them too! Maintaining enthusiasm when the mounted arm arrives on the painting table is my real challenge!
DeleteNice job, lovely colors...and gorgeous flags!
ReplyDeleteThanks Phil, the attractiveness of the flags does pose a problem...there are quite a few more I would like to add to my collection...but I really don't need any more than twelve units of infantry!
DeleteGreat looking addition and enjoy painting all that horseflesh
ReplyDeleteThanks Neil - I have almost certainly made more of an issue than it will actually prove to be - painting a horse isn't really all that hard!
DeleteBeautiful work as always sir!
ReplyDeleteBest regards
Thanks you very much Michal - glad you like them.
DeleteGreat work again Keith. I actually prefer painting horses to anything else now, which is probably a result of having purchased (and subsequently replenished) the Foundry horse paint set which I have been using for the past ten years or so, with replenishment along the way. Some of the colour sets are a little "off" to my eye, but the Bay Brown, Conker Brown and Rawhide are great to use and make painting horses much more fun.
ReplyDeleteCheers Lawrence - I am too mean to buy special paint just for horses - in fact, I only have a limited amount of hobby paint for my figures - a lot of the time, I am using Resene (local paint company, you will recall) acrylic test pots - which are about $3 each and hold 200 or 300ml - some have a slight sheen but they generally work well for me and for horses, the sheen is actually a bonus!
DeleteExcellent Keith. These are definitely gå på! The yellow and blue flowers on the base, what a brilliant touch. You are amazing!
ReplyDeleteLike others have said, I used to baulk at painting horses but enjoy doing them now--even the saddlery.
Regards, James
Thanks for your fulsome praise James...I did deliberately add yellow and blue flowers to the base to match the uniform...a bit OCD perhaps?! I am sure I will manage the gee gees just fine when it comes to it!
DeleteCracking through the units now and looking good. 60 cavalry will be tough but my they will look good when finish bite them off in small chunks my suggestion👍
ReplyDeleteCheers Matt - yes I am thinking, I might stagger them between other projects - I am looking at getting a few more Russian Civil War figures, for example - and with Front Rank up for sale, also thinking about grabbing some long anticipated extra Portuguese Napoleonics ....just in case!
DeleteSplendid command/flag stand! I was thinking that my Russo Turkish War cavalry project, at 36 horsemen, was strong stuff, but it is clear that I am only imbibing small beer in comparison to a much stronger stuff at 60. Nevertheless, I'm looking forward to seeing them!
ReplyDeleteThanks Ed! I think your Russian cavalry are probably more intense work than my Swedes will be, so perhaps your 36 will take the same effort as my 60! One challenge I face is deciding which units to paint...apart from one unit of Dragoons dressed in green, the cavalry seem to be basically all dressed in almost identical uniforms, which might make painting a lot of them a bit of a chore...nice flags can only get you so far!
DeleteReal nice looking base. You’ve really nailed the waving flag effect; the whole base looks like it is charging forward. 😀
ReplyDeleteGood luck on 60 cav. Don’t forget that cav counts as 2 miniatures each!
Thanks Stew - that waving flag effect is very simple - I just use paper, print them in colour at work, attach them with PVA white glue, and while its damp, crease the flag however I like. When the glue sets, the flag has a perm(anent wave)! Cavalry must be worth three or four infantry, surely!
DeleteSplendid stuff Keith...
ReplyDeleteI do like the flag ... it particularly striking.
60 cavalry 😱.... they should look very impressive .
All the best. Aly
Thanks Aly, I am enjoying all the different flags! Yes hopefully I manage to get the cavalry painted in a reasonable time frame ...one per day would take me two months!
DeleteExcellent brushwork Keith and what great looking flags.
ReplyDeleteThanks Ray, pop back again in ywenty four hours, the next batch should be on display!
