The first of the recent 3D prints has rolled off the production line, and pretty nice it is too, even if I do say so myself.
This is the SdKfz 10 halftrack tow vehicle.
I put one of the 28mm 1st Corps figures next to it, to give an idea of scale.
Front and rear number plates come courtesy of leftovers from one of the SdKfz 251 kits built a few months ago.
After previous discussion around whether the model was to scale or a bit too diminutive, I did some online research, as below:
So, as you can see, the SdKfz 10 and 11 were considerably smaller vehicles than the more common SdKfz 7 we all know and love from the Airfix 88mm gun set etc. Using my bush arithmetic of 5mm - 1 ft in 28mm scale, 15feet x 6feet would make it around 75mm x 30mm - and that's about the size of the model. The larger mark 7 vehicle would be roughly 110mm x 40mm, so, a significantly larger footprint. Thanks for stopping by, and I will have another update on Blitzkrieg Fallschirmjaegers shortly.
Lovely crisp 3D print there Keith, I’m always amazed by the sheer number of different half track types that the Germans produced - they did indeed come in all shapes and sizes.
ReplyDeleteThanks JBM. The huge variety of different vehicles is great for wargamers, but came with big challenges for the Germans, as outlined by Stve J below.
DeleteNicely done. A not often seen model, interesting for that.
ReplyDeleteThanks Joe, and I agree....nice to have some slightly different vehicles in my collection!
DeleteThis is a fine model rendered very well. Nice job!
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot, Jon!
DeleteGreat paint job there Keith and I must admit I prefer the smaller half-tracks from a visual point of view. I like the fact that for variety the canvas tilts were often still in their pre-war 3 tone camo scheme which is really nice.
ReplyDeleteWith so many variants the Germans just made their life's so hard trying to have enough spares of everything. The Soviet approach of common use of standardised components certainly simplified battle field repairs etc.
Totally agree Steve! The Grrmans made a rod for their own back, having so many different models and designs of vehicles.
DeleteGreat work sir!
ReplyDeleteCheers Michal!
DeleteNicely done and good looking model
ReplyDeleteThanks Scotty I am happy with it
DeleteThat has turned our really well, very nice model.
ReplyDeleteThanks Donnie I think so too.
DeleteA nice colour for the canvas, is that a Vellejo?
ReplyDeleteCoat d'arms has something pretty close to that. But your question has made me curious. Damned curious.
DeleteHi gents, the canvas is a Citadel one but can't tell you which right now.. I will check this evening when at home (if my befuddled brain remembers.....!)
DeleteJust home and at the painting desk now...the paint is Base Morghast Bone by Citadel!
DeleteThanks, it is pretty much a spot on canvas.
DeleteYou are most welcome, Norm!
DeleteI wonder if you are approaching the point where investment in a 3D printer might pay off Keith? Another lovely model and beautifully painted.
ReplyDeleteI feel like there is a tech upgrade every few years and there is a wave of old printers that go to friends. Maybe you will be 'due' for a free upgrade soon.
DeleteNah, I don't buy enough of them to make a printer cost effective, plus, I doubt my tech savvy is sufficient to get the prints looking right....hoping our mate Mark at 1866 and all that blog might get into it, then piggy back off him!
DeleteThe 3D model looks most effective. Nice paint work too.
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot Peter, I think 3d printing is a great boon for wargamers, and only likely to get moreso I believe.
Deletegood looking HT. Were you stressed about the size?
ReplyDeleteHey Stew....I wasn't particularly, but a few people commented that it looked small.....
DeleteGreat job on the model Keith.
ReplyDeleteRegarding the impression of size. I wonder if we get influenced by the larger sizes of vehicles these days compared to the 30's and 40's. I am sure some suburban utes would be the same size as some WW2 trucks.
Pleased you also like the model, Ben. You may be right about our impressions of vehicle sizes...certainly, if you see an old preserved Austin 7 etc, they are pretty small....particularly as far as width...they always look really narrow to me!
DeleteThat looks brilliant Keith. Great job Keith.
ReplyDeleteThanks Richard - it is rather nice, isn't it? Just posted an image of the next one of the rank!
DeleteVery nice Keith…
ReplyDeleteI am another who likes these smaller German half tracks…
I believe the SdKfz 10 was one of the smallest with the SdKfz 7 being at the big end of things… I been beside a ‘7’ and it definitely would not fit on my drive 😁…
All the best. Aly
Cheers Aly - have a look at tonight's post - there is another "small" halftrack on display!
