It will come as no surprise to anyone that on Monday evening, I bought the discounted Warlord AWI American Starter Army box - it arrived today!
That is a LOT of plastic!
I have had a quick look at the sprues and these Warlord figures do seem to have quite a lot of parts, unlike the Napoleonic Portuguese infantry I have previously done, or the Warlord cavalry....sigh! On the plus side, they do look like very nice figures, so this should keep me busy for a couple of months, once the cavalry is done - in total, that should take care of autumn and winter!
Fortuitously, I have this book in soft copy on my laptop, so have plenty of information on how to paint the figures (in addition to the small guide that is included in the box)
There are almost 300 pages in this book (it includes all the forces, of course, including native Americans and the Spanish).
These figures probably won't be hitting the assembly and painting line any time soon, but it's nice to know I have secured them for future use! Oh dear, look at me, turning into a REAL wargamer with a pile of unpainted figures stashed away!
My plans of no new figures or projects had already failed this year and as I type, I'm planning a 'small' purchase for an ImagiNations Russian force, with possible Ottomans too!
ReplyDeleteThat book is a great resource and I found the Black Powder AWI supplement useful too. I look forward to seeing how these proegress in due course:).
Thanks Steve...personally, I have never had a plan not to buy figures, although thus sudden dive into the AWI Americans is a pure fluke! It's been in the back of my mind, but if I had not stumbled across this deal, it probably would have stayed there for a few more years!
DeleteThe joy of starting a new project! Have fun.
ReplyDeleteThanks Michael...a totally unplanned and random new project, too!
DeleteThat lot will keep you busy. Looking forward to eventually seeing them across the painting table. Reminds me I have a few figures left over that need painting up
ReplyDeleteThanks Scotty...I suspect assembly will take some time...first task will be to buy a new pot of adhesive!
DeleteThat's many, many hours of fun there. A beautiful looking period to paint and collect.
ReplyDeleteHmmmmm.....fun? I am not so sure Richard...at least, as far as sticking them all together goes!
Deleteeek!!! A lot of sprues there Keith. Good luck and I see that the Glue Index on the stock exchange is up twenty points! 😂
ReplyDeleteHaha...yep, A LOT of sprues, for sure Ben!
DeleteI look forward to seeing what you do with this lot, i quite fancy that box at some future point. The encyclopaedia is very good (they also have Roman and Napoleonic in that series). I can also recommend the Black Powder supplement for AWI by Warlord Games, called Rebellion).
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot Norm...yes, I have the Napoleonic and 19th Century uniform books in this series in traditional hard back...they are great resources. Might have to check out that Warlord supplement too.
DeleteOooo, I can foresee lots of glue coming your way too! I shall look forward to seeing the project grow.
ReplyDeleteYes, I could have created a bit of a sticky situation for myself Ray...the only option is to get stuck in to the project!
DeleteI love the smell of plastic in the morning! Good to see that we are not alone in our weakness with being drawn to new periods. The book is an excellent reference. Good luck on many hours of sticking plastic bits together.
ReplyDeleteThanks John, it's not so much a new period as the other side I have been drawn to! I have a half formed idea to have armies for both sides in the periods I play, to give me the ability to play solo games in the future.
DeleteFielding both sides is the way to go.
DeleteYes I think it probably is, Jon!
DeleteAck, don't remind me. my own adventure into the AWI stalled; I got some miniatures and painted a bunch but haven't really gotten it to the table as other stuff became more pressing / fun. still, I love the look of AWI miniatures. good luck getting this project off the ground. that's a big initial investment. I think these figures are originally from Wargames factory but one of their better ranges. 😁
ReplyDeleteThanks Stew. I am pretty confident I will get these done....maybe I will start on them immediately after the current Nappy cavalry are finished up, to ensure I make a start? I didn't know that about Wargames Factory...they are certainly nicer figures than the WSS ones ...but they do have a lot of separate parts, which might be explained by that suggested provenance.....
DeleteA great project to undertake, I have an AWI project that is ongoing, the Continentals are nearly done and have started the Brits. Will be looking forward to seeing what you do with this horde of plastic, they are nice figures.
ReplyDeleteThanks Donnie, they are pretty nice figures, that's for sure.
DeleteI ended up placing another order with the Perrys to purchase another three American battalions I didn't know I needed. As you say, the number of bits in these put me off, but I think you have a lot more patience than me Keith and glad to see you took the plunge with them.
ReplyDeleteTo be honest Lawrence, I was a bit shocked when I saw the sprues, they are more akin to Victrix, than any other Warlord plastics I have seen....so they may very well try my patience somewhat! But I will persevere through a combination of meanness and sheer bloody mindedness!
DeleteFunny you mentioned the Perry's, I have not even assembled one Warlord figure yet, but I am already considering one of their 3 box brigade sets....!!
It is always good to have a project on the shelf ready to start.
ReplyDeleteActually, in a pile under my desk where my feet should go, Peter...but I understand what you mean ! 😀
DeleteYou have books and toys for a great adventure. You will be busy no doubt on this for awhile.
ReplyDeleteNo doubt at all Joe...I have assembled the first sprue of figures tonight!
DeleteWarlord has sucked me into buying a couple times with discount mega sets. Whoops!
ReplyDeleteHaha....yes, everyone loves a bargain Dave! My bargain was via a local retailer but it was certainly the decent saving that got me to buy!
DeleteHurrah! A classic butterfly ambush…
ReplyDeleteIt always knows the best time to strike 😁🦋
All the best. Aly
A 🦋 ambush.....I like it, Aly!
DeleteNice new project, Keith. Just an fyi, but these plastics size up pretty well with Perry plastics. I did some head swaps between them a while back - I used some British grenadier fur cap heads on the Perry British. Just in case you might try it.
ReplyDeleteThanks Dean...you obviously understand the illness I suffer from....I am already looking at the Perry Brigade deal for £55 and adding extra command sprues, as I can create 6 units out of the 120 Warlord infantry but there are not six lots of command with them! And likewise the Perry boxes of 38 figures....ican add 3 more commands to them and they will also make 6 units!
DeleteI'll follow you progress with interest. I have a fair few AWI figures currently doing nothing.
ReplyDeleteCheers OB....are your unemployment figures
Delete15mm/28mm, painted or unpainted??
OMG Keith think between the members of our group we should have enough American figures to relight the war one for one!
ReplyDeleteHaha...it's funny, Mark, I always used to think the problem we had was too few Americans, as I had lots of British....but the balance seems to have swung the other way! My aim with these is just to have enough of both sides to do OHW type solo games, maybe....although I am already suffering from potential scope creep, as outlined above!
