Red Army Progress

As a break from all those 1812 Americans, I pulled out my dwindling supply of 3D printed Soviet female soldiers and painted up another three of them. I bought a group deal from the manufacturer and basically got one of each figures - he kindly included two or three double ups, where I assume the first print was not 100% - so you can see, they are quite an eclectic mix of poses! Today I have a marching figure (there is another almost exactly the same but minus the rifle; a riflewoman in a slightly odd pose, caught spinning around to face a surprise threat perhaps?....; and a female Cossack armed with an  LMG (again, there is a very similar pose, but of a tank crew woman!)

I photographed these outside early in the morning (about 0730) using the x 2 method and they look pretty good to me - I had to delete the originals and redo them as there were small dots of basing material on two of the three figures, invisible to the naked eye (well my naked eyes, anyway!) but glaringly obvious in the photos!

Next on the painting desk are the last seven TAG Border Reivers, which are lovely figures and should paint up very nicely.

Finally, we had some "once in 800 years" lunar event a couple of days ago, where the shadow of the earth fell across the moon and caused an almost total (but not quite) eclipse. Here is an image from about 10pm, when it was supposedly at its best and the moon would look orange/pink. I realised afterwards, I should have used the video camera on photo mode and zoomed, rather than the camera on my phone, which distorted anything closer that the image below

  1. Lovely toys Keith…
I like the marching lady… she looks like she is going to go and punch someone 😁.
A lunar eclipse… splendid… it looks like you had a nice clear night… it’s just been grey here…

    All the best. Aly

    1. Thanks Aly, yes nice weather here at present...late spring day time highs in the low twenties overnight lows mainly still low enough so as to not pose any issues for getting to sleep.

  2. Great work there Keith and a nice mix of poses, which is always great for skirmish games.

    1. Thanks Steve...I have enjoyed these figures immensely although I have no real plan for them,. I bought them because a) they looked good and b) they seemed reasonably priced at two euros...and as I mentioned, I bought a group deal that was something lik nineteen figures for twenty five euros...its been instructive to see how nicely 3D prints can come out. There are LOTS more I have seen on the likes of Etsy but they are far too pricey and freight doubles it again.... 😖

  5. The fur-hatted cossack maid is my fav (but then again, that might just be because I've come off painting cossacks among my RTW project figs). I was out on an early morning power walk this week and was taken aback by the sight of the partial lunar eclipse (quite a thing to behold in the darkness at 0500, a rather surreal time of the morning).

  6. Thanks Ed, I like them all but probably the stern faced marcher is my favourite! We seem to have had several lunar events in the last twelve to eighteen months....maybe what you saw at 0500 was related to our event here?

  7. These 3D prints really are turning out beautifully Keith. I've been tossing up whether to get my own 3D printer, but might hang off for a bit longer. A friend bought one six months ago, but I noticed over the weekend it had been pushed to the back of his gaming room, the novelty well and truly having worn off.

    1. Thanks Lawrence - the prints are not as crisp as metal casting - they are more akin to the "soft" detail of plastic figures BUT they are able to produce some very fine detail, as I mentioned in reference to the trigger guard on the PpSH SMG in an earlier post. I guess the worthwhileness (if there is such a word) of a 3D printer might depend on your scale and era of gaming - for vehicles and scenery, they definitely seem to be a great advantage. I will probably wait till someone more tech savvy and adventurous in our group (see Mark Strachan!) invests in one, and see how they go with it!

  9. I like the spinning around pose. It’s a different one than we usually see in war gaming miniatures.

What do you mean you don’t have a plan for these?! You mean you’re painting miniatures just for the heck of it?!! Madness. 😀

    1. LOL - yes I know that's your attitude to painting Stew - I am a bit different - sometimes I think I am more painter than gamer - even if I KNEW I would never play another game, I dont think I could wean myself off painting figures! I really got these for the reasons outlined in my reply to Steve J above.....I hope you noted 2/3 of these latest figures are back to the traditional Russian blondes?!

  11. Nice work there on the painting KIETH. My friend is thinking of buying a 3D Printer- not sure exactly what he wants to do with it though. I've seen some splendid multi-part buildings in 28mm which were done for the 7Yrs War by a 3D Printer. Very clever. Best Wishes. KEV.
