Pulp Japanese

Here are fourteen Japanese infantry from the recently acquired batch of Tsuba Russo Japanese War figures. In truth, they may be a bit too early but hey, its Pulp, so I can make up my own rules! (just like I will do when I paint the remainder up as a couple of different Chinese Warlord forces!).

These are really nice castings and were pretty simple to paint - I must say, I really do find painting khaki uniforms very therapeutic compared with most earlier era's!

Now, under the tenuous excuse that I had to do some research to come up with ideas for Japanese character figures, here are some gratuitous images I will be using as inspiration when the time comes - I feel some conversion (head swapping) may be resorted to.......!

These images are all from Chinese war movies - there seems to be an entire sub genre of Chinese films involving Chinese heroines defeating nasty bur beautiful Japanese officers - You Tube example attached!

Its all done in the best POSSIBLE taste of course, as Kenny Everett would have said!

  3. And I thought I’d seen everything there was to see on the internet. Lol. Lovely miniatures, nicely painted, and as you say pulp enough to be used in lots of potential encounters.

  5. Those look great Keith! I've always fancied a Japanese force purely so I can have some of their bizarre tanks with their wonderful camo schemes:)

    1. Cheers Steve - I know what you mean about their armour - see here for example, some of my 15mm WW2 Japanese in action....https://1808534.blogspot.com/2016/08/ok-so-tonight-i-think-i-have-probably.html

    1. Cheers Stu - using Tsuba is just a fluke, as you may have seen from previous blog entries - but they are certainly very nice figures! I am having a lot of fun with this project!

  7. These are coming along nicely Keith. I must say you do have an eclectic taste in movies. We went to China a few years back and five minutes of the local television was enough for me.

    1. Cheers Lawrence. I have not been able to watch the whole of that movie because I cant figure out what it is called in English to search for it! Its just a bit of a rabbit hole I went down - start off by Google searching female Japanese soldiers then female samurai then...you end up here! Last night I Googled 28mm female heads - the very first ting that came up was a 3D printing company that makes specifically Asian female faces - very nice they are too - but makes you realise how many algorithms are tracking what we look and and predicting what we want to see next!

  8. Very nice Keith…
Tsuba used to make some Manchurian Bandits which might be suitable for your project…
They were based on characters from The Good,TheBad,The Weird…

    1. Thanks Aly - I think the main challenge with this project might end up being restricting the number of factions I buy and pain! I know my friend Andrew has a similar issue - he has hundreds of beautifully painted individually based fantasy figures yet the games require ten or twelve per side! It is fun though I must admit....

    2. And while you're mentioning me, I must mention that I have The Good, the Bad, the Weird on DVD - it's wonderful!

  9. Those figures are great and you painted them up nicely.

With your Kenny Everett comment and my misunderstanding of some of the glances those adversaries made before the fighting started, I wondered which direction that film was going to take.

    1. Hahaha...yes, I can see how that could happen! I went spiralling down the YouTube rabbit hole last night, I think the film clip may be from a Chinese TV Series called The Eighth Route Army....there are other similar examples too - some Japanese guy has even written an encyclopedia on anti Japanese Chinese TV programmes and Movies! I think it is really time for me to get back to painting toy soldiers now!
