Unplanned Additions

I was browsing our local version of EBay, called Trade Me, for the first time in ages a week ago, when I noticed a seller had some Copplestone RCW figures up for sale - starting at NZ$40 for 55 Figures  - that's about £20 in sterling, I jumped on and put in a few bids but another buyer obviously had an auto bid on and the price had soon reached over $80, so I stopped - 5 packs of Copplestone brand new might cost around $100, but I don't really need this many more Bolsheviks anyway, so decided to quit. The same seller also had a listing for 53 Tsuba Russo Japanese War Japanese infantry figures - I put in a bid of $60 and nothing happened - I was leading the auction! I did nothing more till a few days later, an email turned up, informing me I had won the auction. So I am now the proud owner of these rather nice figures that I am sure I can find a use for in the inter war Pulp era - and at a current price of £8.50 ($17) per bag of 4, this purchase represents a pretty good bargain - 53 figures for the price of 16 by my calculation.

Here is a description of the contents of the pack:

"55 x 28mm Japanese Infantry for Sino, Russo-Japanese, Back of Beyond, WW1 etc. These are very nice Tusba Miniatures figures. There are:

43 Infantry and NCOs 2 Casualty figs 1 Medic running 1 Bugler 1 Standard bearer 5 Various officers

Plus 2 Machine guns with 2 crew each (they are missing the Tsuba pack figure with ammo box but you can add an officer to each for crew or the kneeling NCO)"

So another flutter of the butterflies wings! I have done a bit of work on some more of the Perry Afrika Korps over the last couple of evenings and should have them ready for show and tell in a couple of days.

  1. It is always worth looking (e-bay), every now and then a superb deal does crop up (mainly when I am selling :-)), though most of my recent buys have either been at their money, or I have been outbid.

    1. Yes it was a lucky find Norm - our local version now seems to be mainly just retailers selling brand new stuff at retail prices, so not really what the site was intended for when it was set up...

  2. Finding a bargain on a load of figures is such a joyous thing.

    1. Thanks Michal - my mate Mark at 1866 and All That has a full collection of both sides in this conflict, but I have never played a game unfortunately - they are very nice figures for sure

  6. Hi KIETH,
Great eBay purchase for sure - a real bargain- and looking forward to see your future progress on the PULP FICTION Project. Some of the UK prices on eBay are ludicrous- I saw one old Citadel Dwarf Wizard going for 1,000 Pound! Unreal. So very glad you have scored well with the Japanese 28mm Figures. Cheers. KEV.

    1. Thanks Kev - yes nice to find someone using these auction sites as intended instead of looking to screw a huge price for a "rare" figure - I would NEVER contemplate paying extra just because something was an old 1970's original - same as your Thomas the Tank Engine project experience!

  7. Wow - congrats, Keith - Tsuba makes some excellent figures. In fact, if I didn't already have a bunch of Old Glory Japanese for RJW, I would have gotten some. Nice new period to get into too.

    1. Thanks Dean - yes they are nice but a bit smaller than I thought - mind you, I have been caught that way before, both Hinterland (sadly now defunct) and Empress look big and chunky a la Copplestone on their website but are much smaller in real life - these Tsuba are somewhat similar...but still very nice figures.

    1. Thanks Lawrence - I have never used eBay as sellers are generally in Europe or N America and the shipping rates are extortionate! Our local version has served me quite well - I have even financed some of my first NZ collections 20+ years ago by selling what I thought were truly awful armies (nasty cheap Warrior Napoleonics that you got about 100 25mm figures for £20) - a guy in Taupo paid me about $200 for the collection I think! More recently, kits also been a good source of Matchbox "Yesteryear" vehicles at reasonable prices for my BoB/RCW project - and IO can probably extend that into the Pulp era now.....flutter, flutter butterfly!

    1. Thanks Matt - yes, likely too many, if they are to be used for one "gang" in the Pulp Era project, but they will be fun to paint up

I do like Tsuba Miniatures… I actually have quite a few of the Russo-Japanese figures…
They have been waiting patiently for some colour to be put into their lives…

    All the best. Aly

    1. Hurrah indeed Aly! Perhaps if I get a few of these painted and post some pics, it will inspire you to some Russo Japanese painting effort?! You will recall of course that Mark at 1866 has a reasonable collection of both sides for this conflict.....

  16. A bargain indeed Keith. I have several hundred of these of course to fight the Russians.

    1. Yes indeed Mark - yours are all painted I assume? I have split out a group of about twelve individual poses that I will paint up for one of my Pulp contingents. I hope you are surviving this L4 lock down ok, with some aid from Jean Christophe, sans doubte?

    2. Yes all painted. L4 work has been busy clearing some audit findings, but now that those are cleared and b-all flying activity, I think it will be quiet gong on. Otherwise I am keeping busy with British AWI and Prussians. I als9 have more Prussians, the last of the Paraguayan War figures and some AWI Hessians on the way. And due next week are some more terrain frames.

    3. And yes we have been doing business with Jean-Christophe.

  17. Nice haul Keith. Always love a bargain. I have a particular 'thing' for job lots of mixed figures. There are always gems that you'd never normally buy!
