One last post for January - RCW Additions

Just managed to sneak this post in before the month ended - thirteen so far for January - lets see if I can keep that volume of posting going for the whole year!

As I will be attending an RCW game at Julian's on Friday, I moved the Copplestonr Bolshevik Field Gun to the head of the queue.

Its a really great model, big, bold and beautiful, as are the crew!

I have also had this model sitting on my painting desk for about a year. Its a 1914 Vauxhall from the Matchbox Yesteryear range. With the addition of an RCW Bolshevik driver from the Siberia Miniatures range, this has finally been painted up as a staff car

How the original Matchbox model looked above.....

.....how it looks now below

With a "passenger" added ....

And finally, here are a few figures painted by another gaming friend, Andrew, who earns his living painting for three or four regular clients here in New Zealand. Andrew uses a very different style of painting to Nick - under coating all figures in matt white spray, then applying a wash of dark brown acrylic "test pot" paint that flows into creases but leaves raised areas white. He then paints in the detail with Tamiya enamels.

Great looking figures, I am sure you will agree. although personally, I have no idea what they are! Right, now I am off to the painting desk to crack on with some more mounted Border Reivers.

  2. That artillery gun and crew look great Keith, as does the new paint job on the car. Let's hope in their debut game they give a good account of themselves. Those are lovely models painted by your friend, some of which I recognise (sort of) but most no!

    1. Cheers Steve - fingers crossed they do not succumb to the dreaded "curse of the recently painted figures"!

  3. love seeing things like matchbox vehicles being converted to the table and this is a very good example, the leather effect of the seats is spot on and the driver adds the perfect final touch.

    1. Thanks Norm. I think it may have been the Wargaming with Silver Whistle blog that first gave me the idea to use Matchbox "toys" for this project. I converted several 1920's vans into armoured cars a couple of years back. I now have a four set of "Cadbury" vehicles to repurpose to the cause of the Proletariat! The first of these drove off the painting desk this evening actually, so stay tuned for a peak.

  5. Gun stand is is handsome one, Keith, as is your Matchbox detailing. I have no idea what Andrew’s figures are either but splendid brushwork.

As for blogging productivity, thirteen posts in one month is a rapid fire burst. Are you planning to sustain this rate of fire throughout the year?

    1. Thanks on all counts Jon. Yes, hopefully I can stick to two or three posts per week, unless holidays intervene of course!

  6. Both the gun & crew and the matchbox repaint are great additions to a Russian force for the revolution.
January has been a busy month for posts, and your underlying activity! What you no doubt will be able to do during the year is to share the wonderful adventures of all these characters and units.
Your friend Andrew's work is to be admired....I too must plead ignorance as to what the castings are, but I do not want to meet up with any in a dark alley.

    1. Thanks Joe, sounds like a nice way of telling me to stop amassing more and more figures and get on and play some games with the ones I already have! I hope I may be able to oblige...

  7. Great looking RCW gun and crew, and Matchbox repaint as well, Keith. Andrew's figures look great too - interesting how he adds details with enamels.

  8. Cracking looking gun Keith that will add a little muscle to the Red cause. Interesting thoughts on enamels not used them for many a year but the output is fantastic.

    1. Thanks Stu, I am hoping so, having suffered under the Capitalist Lackeys artillery in several previous encounters!

  9. Good to see that the frivolous capitalist Vauxhall has been converted into an appropriate vehicle for the state! As someone who still paints with enamels, I say "bravo!" to Andrew!

    1. Thanks Ed - the People have a number of similarly appropriated vehicles awaiting conversion to proletarian use!

  10. Nice artillery piece Keith, and it will be great to see it in action. I used to paint with enamels but much prefer acrylics now due to the range of paints on offer and the greatly reduced drying time.

    1. Cheers Lawrence - plus easier to clean/maintain brushes in my opinion, but I must admit I always used Humbrol enamels until Mark at 1866 introduced me to acrylics via the Warpaint range he sold via Marua Road in the early 90's!

  12. Great job on the artillery and the car. How did you go about the car? Just prime it and paint it? Seems to simple. 😀
Have fun at your next game!

    1. Oh, it was a very complicated process Stew, that's why it took me so long. First, I had to buy a can of Matt black spray paint. Then, I had to take the car out to the garden and spray it with the paint. Next, I had to leave it outside for a while to dry...and only then, could I use a large sized brush to apply the paint. Now you can see why it sat on my painting desk for a year or more!

  13. Lovely looking new toys Keith…
These cars of yesteryear type models are a real boon to early 20th century wargamers…
Nice work from your friend Andrew…

    All the best. Aly
