One more mounted Reiver exits the painting table tonight - the remaining four will be completed quite soon too. In addition, I share a few images of the recently converted Matchbox Yesteryear truck that I mentioned in my previous post
The dismounted version of this Reiver was painted some time ago - he is included just as reference to the mounted incarnation
Several close ups from various angles follow...
Here is an image of the original model. If we are being technically accurate, its not actually a Matchbox Yesteryear model at all - its made by Lledo in the UK, who produced a range of "promotional" vintage vehicles like this in the 80's I believe - the guy who ran it was surnamed Odell (Lledo was his surname reversed) and he had previously worked for Matchbox as lead designer of the Yesteryear range - or something like that! If you are sufficiently interested, please Google for more info.
I removed the milk churns, undercoated it with black spray paint and then used a brush to repaint it. The figure is from Eureka in Oz and is part of the Maximillian 1934 range. She was added prior to the spray painting - in fact, like the staff car and driver, this truck has been sitting on my painting desk with the MG gunner attached for quite some time! A little trick I learned on the staff car was that the rubberised tyres are removable, which I did prior to the spray painting - and I left them off until the bodywork had been completed.
Here is the vehicle with a Copplestone command base to give an indication of scale
And followed by a few shots from different angles
I am happy with how this model has come out - I think the gunner fits into position very naturally.
Finally, as its now a couple of weeks since our last bush walk, here are images of the first day of a weekend in Rotorua, being Saturday 22 Jan.
A rather remote entrance way off the side of the main road from Tirau to Rotorua
There were several decidedly rough bits of terrain, where the correct pathway was not entirely obvious
My dear wife let me lead at these points - probably so that if we took a wrong turn, she had an appropriate person to blame!
Fortunately, we made it to the correct destination, and as a bonus, I managed to avoid falling in any streams this time!
Walk two was in the Redwoods park within the boundary of Rotorua itself - very different looking environment from the morning excursion
Above - view from the highpoint, out over Lake Rotorua.
Below, looking up at the high point from which the previous image was taken
In the evening we went to the so called "Eat Street" and picked a very nice Indian restaurant to dine in
After dinner we took a stroll along the lake front
And ended our evening up at the Government Gardens
Next post will likely include the images taken on the Sunday. Thanks for persevering - thats it for tonight!
Love the truck and yes the gunner sits very nicely in the back there. The scenery on your walk looks stunning and that shot of the bare tree trunks in a silvery grey light is good enough to be a screen saver. Ethereal comes to mind. By the way do you have any nasty snakes and such to watch out for over there when you’re out and about?
ReplyDeleteThanks JBM - re the "wild" life - no - thats Australia. I think they have the top ten deadliest snakes/spiders in the world or something stupid like that - not to mention bloody salt water crocodiles - even kangaroos can be dangerous - a friend of a friend was on a cross country motor cycle trek when he collided with one and he broke multiple bones and was in hospital for weeks! Our indigenous wildlife are exclusively birds - many of which are flightless, including of course the famous Kiwi. I think St Patrick must have popped in here before he went to Ireland, because he chased everything remotely aggressive or dangerous out - we have nothing, and never have had!
DeleteKeith, your truck transformation is superb although the original looked great too. I enjoyed your photojournal of your recent walk. It is -10C here this morning so seeing your photos is a bit warming. I never knew redwoods were found outside of California.
ReplyDeleteThanks Jon...I agree about the vintage vehicles! I have amassed a fair number for use in the Pulp Project and there is certainly a bit of a temptation to keep buying more of them! The temp here yesterday when I left fo work at 630am was 22C!
DeleteLovely work with truck sir!
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot Michal!
DeleteGreat looking Reiver and Matchbox conversion, Keith - although I do like the original version of the truck with milk bottles too :) Great scenery as well!
ReplyDeleteThanks Dean. I have hung on to the milk churns but they seem a bit out of scale to me...too late to go with 28mm figures, although they may be useable as background "scatter"
DeleteGreat work again Keith and the truck has come up a treat. Lovely scenery as always and I could have sat at the lake front and watched the sun go down quite happily:). Luckily here we've had two rather nice days in a row and even warm enough for shorts and sandals, which is unusual for early February.
ReplyDeleteCheers Steve...shorts and sandals in February ? Your are making Bristol sound like its in the Southern Hemisphere ....who says.global warming is a crock....oh, I know, the same people who think Covid is a plot to control the population and introduce an authoritarian world government by stealth!
DeleteWell it was on the news today that the plants are flowering about a month earlier than before, which is causing chaos for insects and birds on several fronts. Where we are it does feel like a bit of a microclimate, to the extent that the grass grows nearly 365 days a year. In fact I had to cut it last weekend but could have done it before except it was too wet!
DeleteHaha - as I left today I thought "I guess I need to cut our grass" - it hasnt been done for about three weeks and apart from a few long strands of field grass, its basically dead! I mentioned cutting it over the recent long weekend and my wife said "Dont bother" - which is pretty rare! Apparently overnight low in Christchurch last night was 26C..at 7pm, it was still 30C!Meanwhile on the W Coast of the S Island they have torrential rain and are waiting for rivers to flood and bridges to be washed away!
DeleteGreat work on the Reiver. The truck is great too…..I have ended up in the larger scale for my vehicles and once you have jumped they don’t really mix, so most of mine are closer to 1/50 1/48. The smaller scales work just as well but they don’t mix 👍
ReplyDeleteThanks Matt - yes I can understand that - 1/48 kits are pretty generally available and if I was getting WWII armour I think I would try and go that path, as they are generally more cost effective than specialist "wargaming" kits. The Matchbox cars vary in scale a bit I think but I believe the nominal scale is 1/43 - certainly, the seated drivers I have seem to fit in them pretty well...and as I said above, the Eureka gunner looks good in the rear of the truck too, so I am happy enough!
DeleteNice work Keith, and that gunner fits the truck perfectly to make it all look like it was manufactured for wargaming from the start. We have an Eat Street near us and I find that every time I go I am overwhelmed by the choice and invariably end up getting the wrong thing.
ReplyDeleteCheers Lawrence - yes we found the street a bit like that - and being NZ, it probably only had 20-30 choices of restaurant! The Indian meal was great although my wife checked the bill to make sure she actually got Saagwala because it was very different from any Saagwala either of us has had before!
DeleteVery nice Reiver. The truck has come out looking great
ReplyDeleteCheers Scotty - this range might be a good source of vehicles for the SCW too....
DeleteLovely toys Keith….
ReplyDeleteYou do live in a very beautiful country…
Mind you ours isn’t that bad… it’s just run by clowns at the moment 😂
All the best. Aly
Aly, your country does not hold a monopoly of having clowns in control!
DeleteThanks Aly - many people (not me) think we have a clown (or a donkey) running our country! Jon, your leadership has improved from a couple of years ago at least....in my opinion anyway!

Still impressed by that truck. I have two Lledo models which I have just dug out, to discover that one is the same as yours, only this one has wooden barrels rather than milk churns.
ReplyDeleteThanks Norm - yes, they are a good range and often very cost effective too - I got four assorted Cadbury ones for NZ$20 - ten quid (which here cheap!)
DeleteBoth the truck and Riever are impressive, but being 'point' on a hike and no trippin' into a stream?...Major points for balance.
ReplyDeleteThanks Joe - my previous exploits of stream crossing ahs left an expectation of trouble every time we have to step across moss covered rocks to avoid getting wet feet! you can see from some of the images that it was a pretty over grown walk - i dont think a lot of foot traffic passes that way!
DeleteGreat looking figure and truck. Cool photos of the Bush walk too.
ReplyDeleteCheers Ray - more bush walking to come in future posts!
DeleteI used to collect the Lledo range as a kid. Wish I’d kept them too! Lol
ReplyDeleteI do have a couple Days Gone “Mack trucks” that were given to me by a blog mate in the uk and I repainted them for my ww2 Canadians, way more affordable than official plastic truck kits!
Love the green and mg girl on top! Very nice addition sir
Thanks a lot Dai - oh, if we had all just kept some of our childhood toys....! I remember a review in Military Modelling circa 1976 of the "Britains" Detail 88mm gun and crew. The reviewer said he might "salt one or two away" for the future - I imagine they are literally worth hundreds now - and probably cost ten quid back then (which was a significant amount at the time, to be fair!)
DeleteI think we all have those items on our painting desk that fit for a looong time. I got two CSA ACW brigadiers on my desk that have been there for at least a year. Every time I clean the desk I put them back on it. It’s kinda their spot now. 😀
ReplyDeleteNice job on the figure and the car again. What will take the car’s place on the desk?
Thanks Stew - I have many contenders to replace the two recently completed vehicles - in fact, its a kind of sub culture on the desk - figures arrive in boxes, cause great excitement, get cleaned up, undercoated, painted, blogged and boxed up - meanwhile, the second class models sit waiting to be noticed - there are many - half completed terrain pieces for my Border Reivers project, for a start. I keep looking at them (they need the bases finishing off....then look away again!
ReplyDeleteLove the truck! Inspires me to do the same.
ReplyDeleteThanks John - I like being inspirational - its pretty cool!
DeleteNice reivers and truck, I got a pile of them fo 99p(I did have to pay for postage!) and they work well with my bolt action Soviets and 1/56 armour, gunner works really well!
