The New Arrivals

I described the Stonewall Miniatures figures as "eclectic WWII" in my last post. Well, here they are, you be the judge!

The figures are mainly from the right-hand column.....Chetniks. In case anyone does not know, here is the ever-helpful Wikipedia info:

The Chetniks (Serbo-Croatian: Четници, Četnici, pronounced [tʃɛ̂tniːtsi]; Slovene: Četniki), formally the Chetnik Detachments of the Yugoslav Army, and also the Yugoslav Army in the Homeland and the Ravna Gora Movement, was a Yugoslav royalist and Serbian nationalist movement and guerrilla force in Axis-occupied Yugoslavia. Although it was not a homogeneous movement, it was led by Draža Mihailović. While it was anti-Axis in its long-term goals and engaged in marginal resistance activities for limited periods, it also engaged in tactical or selective collaboration with Axis forces for almost all of the war. The Chetnik movement adopted a policy of collaboration with regard to the Axis and engaged in cooperation to one degree or another by both establishing a modus vivendi and operating as "legalised" auxiliary forces under Axis control. Over a period of time, and in different parts of the country, the movement was progressively drawn into collaboration agreements: first with the puppet Government of National Salvation in the German-occupied territory of Serbia, then with the Italians in occupied Dalmatia and Montenegro, with some of the Ustaše forces in northern Bosnia, and, after the Italian capitulation in September 1943, with the Germans directly.

There was a lot more, but I thought you might get bored - just Google it if you want to! One interesting snippet though is this

The Chetniks were active in the uprising in the German-occupied territory of Serbia from July to December 1941. As a result of the Battle of Loznica at the end of August, Mihailović's Chetniks were the first to liberate a European city from Axis control.

Now, here are some pics of the figures. I did get quite a few extra packs from Mark at Stonewall Miniatures as recompense for the delay in actioning my order (which was very nice of him!) so I don't know exactly what some of these packs are!

This is 2 x Russian mule train and handler - they may end up in Espana!

A BMW staff car - nice little cast metal model, I might get a couple more of these as they could easily be repurposed to civilian models. The model only costs £3.85!

Two packs of the above civilian refugees - can be used anywhere, once again, including Spain!

Five in this pack but only these three variants - Chetnik women with supplies - could easily be painted as Spaniards, including nuns with those headscarves?

Armed Chetnik females

This is one of the bonus packs - Chetniks committing ethnic cleansing/war crimes maybe - or they could just be killing German sentries!

Male Chetniks

Mounted Chetniks

Early WWII Russian command - probably going to end up as Soviet advisors in the Iberian Peninsula!

Soviet casualties and medical staff.

And finally, looking for something to read, I pulled this book from the "library" cupboard - no idea how long I have had it - quite possibly forty years. I have read the odd paragraph but never started at the beginning, which I did a couple of nights ago - hopefully, it does not awaken any latent interest in the Italian Wars and Spanish tercios (which is where the opening chapter begins the story!)

Thanks for dropping by and checking out my blog!

  1. Dangerous to read other than the period you're painting. Although you have purchased an unusual theater of WW2 with look back to SCW possibilities. What's up next in your painting queue?

    1. Hey Joe - I actually have a box of 28mm hard plastic ECW figures by Warlord, donated by friend Rick who assembled and under coated half of them but lost interest - he isn't a big fan of plastic figures. I have painted six but they aren't based so not ready for show and tell!

    1. Cheers Scotty - probably a bit more of a mix than intended as I got two or three packs I didn't order as an apology for the mix up (I originally ordered and paid for these back in January!)

  3. Some very nice characters there, though some look to be lacking in significant under-cuts, so for them, the paint brush will have to work a bit harder.

    1. Thanks Greg, yes, they could be quite useful for the very early war and even for RCW, as the majority of standard infantry figures are wearing the Budenovka style cap.

  6. That collection is an interesting sounding one from an area of the war that I know very little about! Looking forward to seeing where that project goes!

    1. Thanks Dai....I don't know a hell of a lot about it either. A rather nasty internecine conflict akin to what happened in the same area in the 1990,s is my impression...guerrilla warfare, mass murder ethnic cleansing and genocide etc.

  7. Interesting stuff Keith. They look like they will paint up well, and the variety should be fun to tackle.

    1. Certainly is Richard and I just ordered a few extras for existing 28mm collections from a local online retailer, so they should turn up next week!

    1. Thanks Ben - I doubt I will end up with a fully fledged 20mm collection of forces to contest possession of the former Yugoslavia though!

  10. An interesting and unusual mix of toys…
You could certainly fit quite a few of them into the Spanish Civil War.
    All the best. Aly.

    1. Thanks Aly, that was what I thought, although probably not the armed Chetniks of either gender, as their headwear in general looks Eastern European.

  11. A real mix of stuff there Keith and I look forward to seeing the first figures painted. I could easily see many being used for the SCW, especially for the International Brigades, given their real mix of uniforms and members from across Europe and beyond.

    1. No, no, NO! Bad Iain! I will NOT be starting the Great Italian Wars - even though reading about the Spanish tercios made the prospect slightly tempting!
