Mounted Red Rowan Reiving Family Completed

I actually finished these off the tail end of last week but then I had the Friday RCW game to report on, so I held these back to justify another post and keeping the Feb total moving along! Six very nice figures that more or less match up with the dismounted versions I painted 18 months ago - the odd extra shield or cloak on the mounted figures but they have the same weapons and, more importantly, the same faces!

The whole Red Rowan crew

Followed by an individual pic of each "pair" of mounted and dismounted versions

And finished off with a separate image of each of the four recently completed mounted figures

And, to keep things moving along picture wise, here are the images from our day trip over to Man o War Bay on Waiheke island with our friends Russell and Jeane on Sun 30 Jan.

A couple of views taken en route from Kawakawa Bay Marina out to Waiheke

Above and below - looking out from the beach at Man o War Bay, where we spent a pleasant couple of hours drinking beer, wine and eating fried calamari and chips (French fries)

Views on the return trip

We stopped at this little aby on the way back and had a sea swim - first time in the water for my wife Ruth in about five years!

Final part of the return journey

Jeane left and Ruth right - Jeane got the less obtrusive life jacket obviously!

Right, off to finish another small batch of Pulp figures I can post in a day or two!

  1. Those Reivers look great Keith and some lovely poses on the dismounted figures. Great photos of the sea too. Sadly the Bristol channel doesn't' look quite as blue or as inviting.

    1. Thanks Steve - they are great figures. As Billy Connolly said about the East Coast of Scotland "It looks like the seaside out of the train window, but its just the Arctic Ocean with a different name. They call it the North Sea as it moves south, if they called it the Arctic Ocean, no one would go their on holiday!" (That's where I am from BTW and I can attest to the fact that although there are occasionally hot sunny days in mid summer, the sea is always freezing cold!)

  2. Nicely done, I do like the way they have sculpted mounted and foot figures to match. The sea looks lovely 👍

    1. Cheers Matt - as I bought the two sets about 18 months apart, it took me a little bit of research on their web page to be sure I was matching up the correct figures. In fact, I made a mistake - I thought the guy in the blue cloak and Morion was the boss, so put him on the bosses horse (it has slightly flasher saddlery....) Ah well, never mind! The sea was very pleasant thanks.. a bit warmer than your fresh water lakes! I have swum in some of them but it was forty plus years ago during a prepubescent family holiday in the area!

  3. Reivers sculpts as characterful as ever, your painting style brings out the best in them. Not always easy to match a painting / basing job from 18 months earlier .... as I have just discovered!

    1. Thanks Norm - my basing technique has remained pretty constant for a few years and I guess the advantage I have with paint is I mix up my own shades half the time, so I just keep adding something till the colour matches the previous one!

  4. The figures look well matched, such a story waiting to be told. (Hint hint)
The one to one scale naval photos certainly look like a nice day out.
Our bodies of water are entering the charming phase where the ice thins out so that you can not walk or swim on them. Neither the ice fisherman nor swimmers are happy, and the boats are all doing the out dance.
But in several weeks things will change. So much to paint in the meanwhile.

    1. Haha thanks Joe. My sister once live at a place called Winter Harbor - in Maine I think - Its claim to fame was that the Atlantic Ocean froze solid there some winters! I assume there was a navy base there, as her ex husband was in the USN. She also had postings to Guam, Florida and London with him - she now lives in Florida, as do my niece and nephews.

    1. Thanks Iain! Last week, when there was torrential rain in the S Island, the overnight low in Invercargill (far south) was 2C! Its all back to normal sunshine now of course!

    1. Thanks a lot Jon - the scenery I have seen in your cycling photos looks pretty good too! I guess the good thing about where I am is we have very mild winters - no snow and hardly any frosts!

  10. Cool to have matched pairs; something I’ve only done in Lotr for characters. I’m assuming the rules allow for getting dehorsed? 😀

Nice sea side. I have a lake nearby be somewhere I think….I dunno. I’m an inside person.

    1. Thanks Stew! We have only had one or two games and the rules used were three pages that came free in an old WI - but if you want to pillage peoples farms and house, you are going to have to dismount at some point I guess! I am 50/50 on the inside person thing - I dont have any desire to own a boat but happy to go on occasional trips on other peoples - same with fishing - I am happy enough to go if invited but if I never went again, it would not bother me much! Sitting hunched over a thirty year old desk, slowly ruining my eyesight painting toy soldiers is my favourite pastime for sure!

  11. Lovely figures as usual Keith, and a nice day out. Looks like a great day out to Waiheke, and calamari and chips always tastes better on the beach.

    1. Cheers Lawrence - yes, nice to have friends with a boat! That was a first for us, have not been on Waiheke for 25+ years and now been there twice in three weeks!

  12. The mounted Reivers look great…
They certainly look like they are ready to go out and do a bit of wealth redistribution…

The seaside looks lovely… the water actually looks blue and welcoming…unlike the North Sea… Steel Grey and as you say always freezing.
I still like it though especially the view you get as you go up the A1 between Bamburg and Dunbar…

    All the best. Aly

    1. Cheers Aly, "wealth redistribution"....I like it! I agree about the aesthetic attraction of the North Sea too.....it's just not too good for swimming in...I did try on my last trip home but I only got to waist deep and had to give up!

  13. I lived in Aberdeen when I was 6-7 and I still remember the horror of dipping my toes in those waters! Then growing up the majority of my childhood and teens on the SW Welsh coast and “enjoying” the always-windy fridged Irish Sea…. I shiver just thinking about those waters.

Your pics always look so nice and welcoming in comparison lol

The revivers are a really cool group! Well done

    1. Thanks Dai, it's still always a pleasant surprise to me when I get into the sea here...although the first couple of seconds us still a slight shock, like a swimming pool, once you are in, the water is actually a nice temperature!
