Proud Parent Day

Today I had a day off work to attend and then celebrate the graduation of our daughter Amy at the end of her three years of university studies, whilst continuing to hold down a role as a part time flight attendent with Air New Zealand.

I think in all her assignments and exams, she only failed to achieve an A once in three years, and was awarded a Deans Commendation more than once.

She has worked extremely hard and dedicated herself to achieving her aim of a Batchelor of Business, and today was her day to celebrate her hard work.

The ceremony was held at Spark Arena, a multi-use venue in the Auckland CBD

The Graduate!

With her little brother Michael.

With her Mum.

With her friend Corrina.

With her friend Nikita.

The family group.

Cheers Amy!

A "few" flowers" to mark the big day!

  2. Congrats to her and to the proud family and friends too! Our daughter didn't bother with hers as it was about 6 months after they had finished and she would have had to travel back up to Edinburgh for the day. IIRC she even had to pay for a copy of her degree!

    1. Thats unfortunate Steve -we have friends whose daughters graduation was on and then off again three times, due to Covid (that old chestnut!) and didn't receive her degree until about 12 months after she finished - if Amy had had to wait that long, she would not have bothered!

  4. That's a nice post, congratulations! My daughters in her final year so we should be doing the same in the summer, we're all the grey haired men in the family photos if we're lucky to have hair!

    1. Thanks Iain, the weird thing is, my hair genuinely still has some hints of colour when close up, even in photos (see the holiday snaps from October, for example) but in the cold light of the great outdoors, and at some distance, it looks completely grey ......!

  5. Congratulations on the accomplishment of your daughter's graduation. Certainly they grow up and yet miraculously we don't age. Oh, wait, that's not entirely true. Enjoy the hair, grey or whatever color you deem. Otherwise you always need a hat.

    1. Thanks Joe. There is a line from Robert Burns about giving us the gift to see ourselves, as others see us....I am not sure it is such a gift!

  7. Well done to your daughter. The Spark looks like a good venue and plenty of decent places in downtown Auckland to go an celebrate afterwards.

    1. Thanks Lawrence...yes, we walked past about a hundred venues to reach the one in the Viaduct selected by my daughter! She had booked it about two months ago 😀

    1. Cheers Ben - and actually, she got a very nice email from her manager at Air NZ, to be read out to her parents, saying what a wonderful young woman she is and congratulating us on our parenting skills - which was very nice!

    1. Thanks Peter - she did work hard - certainly a lot harder than I did for my MA (Hons)! I just hope she gets a chance to put her education to use, unlike her father - or one of my colleagues, who has TWO degrees, one in Oceanography and the other in Earth Sciences - and has spent the last 20 years in sales roles!

  12. Bravo: a proud day, indeed. Well done all around, certainly for and the recognition of her accomplishments, but also it speaks well of the family (take a bow, Mom and Dad!).
