New Arrivals - Benvenuti Compagni!

On arrival home a small white parcel awaited me - with Royal Mail markings - huzzah!

A quick inspection revealed it had originated from the Brothers Perry - my Italians have arrived for my Pulp Project - now I have to do some research on how to uniform them for foreign climes in the early to mid nineteen thirties.....

This recently acquired soft copy of this book should help....

The cause of much excitement

Four little black boxes were contained within

WWII Italian Command

WWII Italian riflemen

WWII Italian HMG and crew

Off topic - an AWI Camp Set that I will take some time to consider - they may end up as GNW Swedes - or just be added to my British AWI collection....

That's my lot for this evening - one package of troops received - three more to go (four if you include the Brigade Games debacle but I am expecting them mid 2022, and most likely wont be dealing with that supplier again)

  1. Another fine start, some research and the first castings of a new project! Some 1930's uniform info can be gleaned from the Osprey on the Spanish Civil War. There are some great articles on the Abysinnian campaign from older (early aughts) Min Warfare issues. Last but not least a few blogs were also helpful. Looking forward to your work on this Pulp project.

    1. Thanks Joe....yes, I am thinking the book is probably a bit late, but I am sure I will be able to find an abundance of information on the web!

  3. Excellent! A package of lead on the doorstep is always a welcome treat! I have a number of such packages winging their way to me after a Holiday Sale shopping spree.

    1. Thanks Scotty. I wanted the more tropical uniforms so went with the Perrys figures, but I may use Empress when I come to do a Spanish contingent for the Pulp Project. Look forward to seeing some Italians added to your SCW collection!

  5. Those Perry sculpts are really nice, but sadly I don't play with 28mm figures these days, otherwise I would certainly treat myself to them. The postal service here is a bit hit and miss at present, probably down to Covid. I hope they turn up today as I have some items awaiting delivery.

    1. Thanks Steve.....if I were trying to do solo at home, I think I would be forced to use 10mm or smaller too! Re freight, I have had many courier items take a week or more to get from one part of NZ to me. A colleague received a package sent from Germany yesterday that had literally taken longer to get from Auckland airport to his home (about 70km) than it took to get from Germany to Auckland!

  6. A very cool new project, Keith. I'm waiting on a box of Wargames Atlantic Italians for the Western Desert Campaign.

    1. Thanks Dean...I did look at those, and the Warlord ones, but I only need around ten per faction for my pulp armies so decided to go with the Perry version. I look forward to another stunning paint job on your Italians a few days after you receive them!

  7. Nice stuff ๐Ÿ‘ I have looked at Italians but I don’t find them very inspiring as a force. The camp looks great might have to look for that in the future๐Ÿ‘

    1. Thanks Matt - I know what you mean - I think we have all been put off by the (probably) unfair myth that the Italians were useless in WW2 (bit like the French reputation too for that conflict. But I wanted as many different "major power" contingents as possible, as I envisage running a game for a group of up to eight players at some point....hence I will have French and Spanish as well!

  8. Always nice to have toys in the post. Don't let the Italians start pinching the bums of your Russian gals.

    1. Its certainly great to receive those parcels JBM! I think if the Italians try any of their tricks with the Russian girls, they might have their fingers chopped off!

  9. Was just down in my workspace tidying up and was rummaging through my own little black Perry boxes: top notch stuff, whatever the line. Those AWI camp scene figs do have many possibilities.

    1. Thanks Ed - I really like those little black boxes the Perry's use - they add to the excitement of unwrapping the parcel! Yes their vignettes are really nice work with lots of possible uses.

  11. They do look nice, as the vast majority of Perry figures do. I find I am using my Ospreys less nowadays as I can normally find what I need on the internet. Ospreys are still great for the background reading and to fill in the gaps though.

  13. Hurrah for new toys Keith…
The Italians are rather nice… as are the crazy looking vehicles they used in the desert.

    All the best. Aly.

  14. I always liked the fact that Perry stuff comes in little black boxes. Makes it easier for the inevitable storage for months or years before painting. ๐Ÿ˜€

    1. LOL yes they are good for that Stew! Storing unpainted figures is not usually a problem for me but I do have a few Carlist War figures (I am talking 6 or 8) sitting in these black boxes in a drawer in the garage - I bought them years ago to "do" the First Afghan War - they have the right Bell Topped Shakos which are quite rare for the British Army and only lasted 20-30 years I think

  15. I love getting those black boxes! Doesn't happen often as I want the free postage, which means spending £200! First Afghan war sounds good, I'm reading a book about it at the moment, the Italians are always stylish in whatever war they're in!

    1. Thanks Iain - I dont think I need £200 worth of Perry figures, or I would go for free postage too - with this small order, postage came close to increasing the cost by 50% - 4 packs less VAT is something like £25 and postage was £12 I think :( The First Afghan War project never really got going - I have two or three units - I might return there one day. A few years back, I had a grandiose plan to "do" every British 19th century colonial War - I have a fair bit of stuff for the latter 30 years of the century but not so much for earlier...
